Thanks to both of you for the replies.

With regards to the video driver, I have partially eliminated that as a problem since all other games play with no issues.

Regarding Java, it is entirely possible since I installed Java 7 64bit when I formatted and reinstalled his Windows. I will uninstall the 64bit and try Java 6 32bit.

If anyone else has input, please let me know.

Thank you.
No problem, i would recommend trying Java 7 since i used that on my last laptop(shitty $280 one) and when i launched my minecraft, it was like two to three seconds faster...but if your into coding, i would recommend just using Java 6 as that is what most people use and if you code in Java 7, they need that too(I read it in a post on the oracle forums somewhere). I think i may of found a fix that requires NO modding, just a tweak of the config file.

Sounds like a plan (not the coding bit, I don't do coding), but I will try Java 7. I will get to it in the next few days and post the results. Thank you.

I’ve found it tends to run slower on laptops than it does on desktops, regardless of specs. It might have something to do with integrated graphics on laptops, but I don’t know the extent to which Minecraft uses it. I’ve found I get better framerates the cooler my laptop is, so being in a cold room or keeping the heating off in the winter can actually help a lot. Also, Java on OS-X is slower than Java on XP, so if you have a mac with bootcamp you can boot onto windows for faster framerates.
this made me lol, integrated card on my laptop? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, no ._.

Just an FYI, I have been swamped with work so I have not tried changing Java to 32bit on the laptop in question yet. I will get to it soon and post back.

I completely agree with you. I have a 5 yrs old laptop, quite good for the time but now getting really old, and I noticed that while the laptop is cool, I can run the game at 60 fps max, and 30 fps min. 5 minutes later, when my computer starts melting, I'm running at around 2-3 fps, and have errors like crashing, freezing, double-clicking (that is VERY annoying) and lag to the point that I have to wait a couple of minutes in order for me to be able to resume playing.

This is very annoying because I have put hundreds of hours into the game, and now I am almost not able to play it anymore... I think I need a new computer, but I'll have to wait 3 months to get it...

Oh well, back to CSS.

PS: If someone finds a way (mod, settings or other) to speed up Minecraft, I'd appreciate it if you told me. I really enjoy playing that game, and I'm sad to be forced to play any other game due to the computer requirements.

You should rank a playable Minecraft over pretty water. :)

You guys got a problem running minecraft on laptops? really? Ok so then use your brain in this situation. Hmm, my laptop is a piece of crap that is probobly 5 years old although i expect it to run a highly complex 3D game. Guys you seriously are the people who make me mad. Download a program called GBoost and run it before you open minecraft. It boosts ur computers speed incredibly. I even use it on my brand new laptop that has 4GB Ram and an Intel Core i5 Processor 2.70GHz. Now if your not very good with knowing those specs, thats pretty darn good. I use it and before i had like idk... 75 FPS. Now with Gboost i got like 110-150 FPS. On my moms computer she ran minecraft at like 7 FPS and now it runs like 30-40 FPS. Also you could increase the amount of ram that Java uses too. Just go into ur control panel and click the Java Entry. Then go to the Java tab and click view. Theres a box with runtime parameters. in that box copy and paste the following code without the quotes "-Xmx1G -Xms1G". Replace "1G" with the amount of ram that you have. If you have Ram in MB you shouldnt even be playing minecraft on that computer. for Instance i have 4GB ram on my computer so my code would look like this: "-Xmx4G -Xms4G". Click Ok on all those windows you opened and now play minecraft. Tell me if it helps at all...it should. Sorry i had to be so cruel at the begining of the post but seriously...why cant you guys use google?

Ok, so my new Desktop lags, here are specs

AMD Athlon II X4 645 Quad-core Processor

NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE

4GB DDR3 Memory
Heres why...you have an nVidia GeForce 6150SE Integrated GPU. Minecraft runs horrible with integrated GPUs, especially that one. I have that in one of my desktops and im not even gunna say how bad it is. Get a Graphics card for that computer. I got the nVidia Quadro FX580 for mine.

I'm seriously surprised this has not been said yet! :o - Here is your absurdly easy solution :) :
Right click Minecraft.exe , "run with graphics processor", "High performance *blankblankblank*", problem solved! :D.

Minecraft does automatically use the integrated gpu, and you need to tell it not to. Even if you set your gaming gpu to open MC with it instead of the integrated, it won't unless you manually do the method above instead of just double clicking. Yes there are other troubles such as you using the incorrect java version (32 instead of 64, and reversed), and low ram allocation can be detrimental to your fps, but the assigned gpu (graphics processing unit / video card)being the integrated is the largest problem.

you guys haven't seen an XPS laptop yet have you??? it doesn't matter whether its a laptop or desktop, it depends on the processor, graphics card, and memory. My XPS L502x, which is almost brand new, has intel i7 core processor 2nd generation, 8gb ram, I think it beats a lot of desktops, so YOU have no computer intelligence @(insertnamehere)anyway you need a new computer to make it run faster, preferably a gaming computer.btw i have nvidia Geforce

People look at minecraft and think it will run on any computer. They never stop to think about the number of vertices each map requires. and yes, vertices are part of the graphics.

This isn't the real reason. The real reason is that Notch has filled up the rendering subsystem with superfluous 3D crap like ambient occlusion, which either (preferably) shouldn't be there at all, or at the very least, should be off by default. As a result, the 5% or so of the population who run Minecraft on a system that could host SkyNET get to enjoy some extra eye candy, while the ability to run Minecraft on lower end hardware, lessens with every patch.

Go ahead, fourteen year olds. Scream at me about how you love your ambient occlusion, and I'm wrong for considering it nothing but spam.

I think were all missing the point here, which is to solve the lag problem in Minecraft, not argue whethere PC is better than Laptop.

My girlfriend just recently bought Minecraft, it lagged instantly, so we turned the graphics down it worked fine for a while but began lagging once again.

She uses a Toshiba Windows Vista with 1.80GHz and has 4GB of RAM. The graphics/video card however is integrated so it's nothing special.

Is there anyway we can get it to run much smoother or has this just been a waste of money?

Thanks in advance.

my minecraft lags a bit with the GLSL shaders on. i'd like to think its a java limitation because my computer can run Crysis 2 and BF3 on highest with absolutely no lag. I even allocated 4GB to java process.

my specs:
AMD Phenom II x6 @ 3GHz
8GB RAM
Radeon HD 6950

You are referring to a proper gaming card...most laptops dont have that...mine has Intel HD Graphics and i can run mine fine IF it is only running on one processor...

=================================================================================

IF YOU GUYS HAVE GOOD GRAPHICS CARD, RAM, AND OTHER SHIT BUT HAVE LAG RUNNING MINECRAFT READ THIS...
Minecraft was meant to run on SINGLE processor systems, since most systems have dual processors(laptops do have dual)
it has not been correctly utilized to run on those...
FIX
1. Find out a way to see which processor has the most usage(ANY way)...memorize this processor number
2. Open Task Manager
3. Right click 'javaw.exe'(your minecraft process)
4. Select Affinity
5. Change this to ONLY the processor which has the LEAST amount of usage, this is generally the second processor
6. Wait a few seconds
7. .....
8. IS IT FIXED???

This is caused by the GLSL shaders using OpenGL...which isn't very good, if you still want a realistic minecraft feel, get Water Shader, download my custom shader lag reducing settings(will upload n a few days), and get a realitic texture pack
