I'm sending out an open invitation for anyone who wants to submit guides, tutorial, research, texture packs, skins, etc etc etc. Basically anything Minecraft related. I am putting together a consolidated, easily-navigable knowledge-base and resource center. Over the next few weeks, I will be contacting people individually asking if they would like their work included, but it's much easier for people to contact me. All credit will be given to the creator.
Think 'Thread O' Links', except larger in scope, and easier to navigate.
For those of you who don't know me(yet), I am an avid Minecrafter who is looking to improve the community through research and quality discussion. My current subject of focus is mining, but I will be 'branching' out into other subjects. I also wish to create tutorials covering just about every subject, so anyone looking for a how-to will have one location to come to, and get the same quality tutorials on any subject.
I'm certain this thread will be buried, so if you like it, make sure to bookmark it
Also, almost everything I post on the forums I will also post on my website(currently a blog, will upgrade later, see signature for links).
Currently most of my threads are in an article style, I will create tutorials when I get a new computer and can record videos.
If there are any topics or questions you want me to explore, feel free to ask here, PM me, on my website... whatever you want. I'm a student of science and pride myself on looking at things from more than just the 'common' perspective.
Lastly, I'm decent at Gimp/Photoshop, so if you have any requests for sigs, banners, etc... let me know and I'll probably do it for fun/practice.
I'm thinking about starting a guide on how to construct different, real-life housing styles in MC. Everything from medieval to colonial to art deco. Would be a challenge and learning experience for me, but I wanted to see if there is interest in something like this.
Of course my good man , in they year of '86 I was browsing some of the caves in my world looking for a tad bit of coal to keep my abode warm. And what do you know!?!?! a giant combusting scrotum snuck up on me!
After working on egyptian style houses for a while, I wanted to put them all together in a city layout to showcase them, so I started on this last night. This area is one of the entrances to the Inner City, where the palaces will be. Laying out the streets(like the one shown in this picture) of the Outer City is definitely going to take some time.
The buildings on the street are worker houses, such as those at the Armana Worker's Village. All the houses were the same size, a few rooms, and similar layouts. These houses will be where the workers for the Inner City, as well as nearby projects, live.
I'm kinda making this for the Lady Phoenix. She loves the Tomb Raider game series more than anything, and wanted a manor of her own in Minecraft. Still a WIP, I'm putting off adding the wings and fixing the roof for now, doing some landscaping instead.
Sorry, but I suck at fountains.
Split Staircase, there will be one going down as well(not on this map though since I'm at bedrock).
Thanks to my good friend Grizdale for coming up with this idea, I was just working on layouts that work as quickly as possible. The idea is to use the lava-redstone-activation to get lava to flow to certain areas when flipping a switch. Then the lava tries to create a fire block next to wool, but all available air spaces except for the bottom row of the portal are blocked off. The first design took 1-2 minutes. My first design took 30secs to 1 minute. This design runs in about 15seconds to 45 seconds. I don't have pictures of the last design because I accidentally messed up that world, so this is close. Besides, Notch is slowing down fire spread so the bonus wool room underneath won't help as much.
I don't want to do it right now, but if someone made a version with 3 pillars of lava on each side instead of one, the time would be faster and more consistent.
You can also make it faster and more consistent by adding a room underneath filled with wool. Fire spreads more quickly and can jump up through any block to light the portal as well. Don't know how effective this will be in 1.6 though.
Nice, I like how you managed to make it look cool and have a short activation time.
I did 5 runs, got under 30 seconds on 4 of them, and 50 seconds on the other, but that could have been luck. More kudos to you for coming up with the idea.
I'm going to hold off on my experiments until after the patch, just in case something else gets changed that wasn't mentioned. I'll have to find something else to work on in the meantime.
There is often confusion about which layers are which, and I hope to put solid information on that subject out there. Many people(myself included) throw out information on layers... layer 12 mining, layer 14 mining, lava on layer 10 and below, etc etc...
Well, here is the truth. You have to realize that blocks take up vertical space. The bottom layer of bedrock is from 0.0 to 1.0, but we call that layer 1. So, layers are referred to by their tops. This image shows all the layers up to the magical 'Lava Layer'.
When the map is generated, it automatically fills all caves with lava(I've never seen one otherwise) under a certain layer. You can see in this image that it fills layers 11 and down.
In the next image, I am standing on the lava layer, aka the top of the lava is the bottom of my feet. This is usually referred to as layer 12 mining. The F3 shows 12.6. This makes sense, because 11.0 is the top of the lava, my legs take up from 11-12, and my head is in the space between 12 and 13. In other words, I would be mining layers 12 and 13 in layer 12 mining.
My recommendation is to mine up two layers, mining layers 14 and 15. I call this layer 14 mining.
I think the naming convention is fine, as it refers to the coordinate number displayed in F3, but I just wanted to put this out there.
Subbed.
I don't 100% agree with your philosophy threads but they are interesting to read and your science articles are fantastic. Having them all in an easy to find thread is great.

I am Aldaron, a Tree Spirit. I came into this world connected to a young birch sapling, whose name is Telperion. It is a strong tree, full of heart and love. Together, we will grow. Together, we will thrive.
I decided to participate in the Tree Spirit challenge, using my favorite seed. I call the seed Avalon Grove. I play the challenge on hard. It is proving to be a difficult challenge, I currently only have 2 hearts and am in desperate need of food. Soon I will be able to grow roots to the grass and begin growing wheat.
More members like you please :smile.gif: You build some nice things, do you play legit much?
Thanks. I played legit for months straight, but started craving the freedom of classic, so I've mostly been just playing creative style with Single Player Commands, and doing my threads. The biggest reason is just because I don't have enough time to do everything I want, and I want to make the most of it. Right now I don't have any survival worlds that I'm playing.

Awesome ideas (not mine):
The Aether
Oceancraft
Geocraft
Farmcraft
Google these to find out what they are!
Thanks, and bring them on! :laugh.gif:
I'm sure you do, you just have to find it!
Thanks, I have a lot more coming.
