Are you tired of waiting for mods to be updated? Did you accidentally updated minecraft without a backup? Want to temporarily "visit" the older minecraft versions? Then I introduce to you the new downgarde tool. This uses binary patch files (created by CyborgDragon) and does not in any way download any of Mojang's .jar files! This is very easy.

There is no support for servers, please use Bukkit.

System Requirements:

Internet Access
Any operating system that supports Java 1.7+

Features:
Easy download of patches
Simple Patch/Unpatch
Multiple Backups

Tutorial:

Additional instructions for manual way:
1. Download the Patches.zip here.
2. Choose your patch, each patch file will be named 'minecraft.patch' and will be placed in folders, the first letter of each folder represents the type of Minecraft revision (a = alpha, b = beta, f = full/final).
3. Copy the 'minecraft.patch' file to the same directory as MC Downgrader is located.
4. Run MC Downgrader and just click patch.

Downloads:

Windows:
You can download it here.

Linux:

The tutorial can be found here.

Mac OSX:

The download can be found here.

Patches:
Choose which patch you want from here.

Direct Links:
Spoiler:

This tool is hosted on the FFMC server, servers cost money to run. If you like the tool please feel free to donate!

Legality:
I share the same viewpoint as CyborgDragon.

Quote

A lot of people question the legality of this. Well, it is not directly redistributing the minecraft jar files. It is the differences between the latest jar files and older versions. The difference("patch") files will not work without the files that need to be patched, in this case, the latest version of Minecraft. They will not work with anything else. Now, this clears it of one part of the forum rules, but not the illegality. Well, to clear that up, I've contacted Mojang multiple times, and they have been made aware of it at least twice, their response wasn't much, but I take it as a "do what you will." If they ask me to take it down in the future, I will.

Disclaimer:
This modifies the minecraft.jar binary file. By downloading and using this tool you understand the risks of damaging your minecraft.jar file and that 68x will not be held accountable for your actions!

Was that suppose to show up?

Please take that tutorial down. I'm 100% certain that I linked the Windows version correctly.

This tool is awesome. I still remember the huge amounts of lag that were generated from leaf decay back when Alpha transitioned into Beta. I wanted to downgrade back so badly, but I couldn't find out how. Awesome job.

Extremely helpful, was able to downgrade legally to 1.4_01 without issue.  Good for modders that want to revive or continue older mod projects that weren't updated.   :GoldBar:  :GoldBar:  :GoldBar: for you, sir.

I find it in rather poor taste that you've used adf.ly for a simple TXT file.
