I havent seen any word about this yet. But I was thinking. Does lightning have the potential to burn down a house, given that it is made out of flammable material? My house has a wooden roof with wooden supports at the corners, then I realized my home is just one big fuse if any part of it was struck by lightning, leaving only a stone frame. But if it was raining would it get put out instantly? Has anyone experienced this yet?
I think rain puts out any fires instantly, so no worries. We would have a panic on the same scale as the time Notch decided to make lava burn things. No reports so far.
Good to know, I've had enough problems with fire since I started playing. One my first day I set the whole world on fire in apocolyptic proportions while experimenting with Flint and Tinder, Smokey was not amused.
Rain does put it out instantly, but if the thunder hit the underside of a tree, or perhaps a side unexposed to the rain then a fire would begin.
It can be dangerous, just be careful with house and tree placement.
Well, for lighting to hit the underside of a tree, the lightning would actually have to curve, and it doesn't do that. It comes straight down. Same with an unexposed side. Lightning comes straight down, not at any sort of angle, so it's not really possible.
I really don't think anyone has anything to fear there.

The real danger is the rain stopping right after the lighting strike and thus not putting out the fire.. Apparently this has already happened to one person.
I think it would be cool to be able to place iron blocks to act as lightning rods to protect structures, or even be able to craft a proper lightning rod, for example

I guess this goes back to a rule I learned when I burned down my 3 story wooden tower with lava one day back in Alpha... Don't build important things out of Wood.
Did the lighting punch a hole in the glass or was the pool wood bottomed?

Yeah. That would be dangerous. Unlikely, but dangerous.
Most lightning rods are made from a metal that conducts electricity well (brass or copper). The rod is normally placed to be the highest point on the structure. A wire is connected to the rod and run to a rod buried in the ground. When lightning strikes the rod, the electricity is transferred directly to the ground instead of through the structure or electrical system.

if lightning hits when it's raining, the fire gets put out before it can do any damage (I tried when i got a rainfall on my SSP game, can't even deliberately burn wood in the rain)
that said, the only construct I have in any world in any danger would be my farm on valley life..everything else is carved out of solid rock or built with stone anyway.
Ahaa!
All you wood-loving guys, what you need is an insurance! Yes, to cover up all your expenses and all the hard work you put into all this. Never mind even the racket-guys! For a small premium that can be included, too.
What say? Next item should be "insurance policy". I will sell them to you, once implemented.
wereally dont need lightning rods. what we would need is for lightning to strike the highest place thats close. then, we could use iron blocks and redstone instead of a craftable thing.
