Now with weapons. The gold sword is the dagger of Romulus from Brotherhood (although it's more of a stilletto than a dagger...). Yes, it looks derpy. It's supposed to-- gold swords are useless.

Why do the nether blocks look futuristic and not at all like the others, you ask?
Well, it all ties back into the plot of assassin's creed-- the 'reality' of renaissance Italy is actually just a genetic memory that the main character Desmond is reliving, thanks to a fancy device called the Animus (which is run by the bad guys, by the way). Anyway, the netherack blocks are made of metal and carry the Abstergo (bad guy) logo to symbolize the place Desmond is held captive. Ditto for the glowstone (which is supposed to look like stylized flourescent lights). The soulsand is made to resemble the glitchy 'program' that Desmond uncovers hidden within the Animus, which I thought was perfect since the Nether is another realm anyway.
