This mod allows you to use your mobile device as a "Second Screen" or a "Companion app", your device can show informations from the Minecraft instance. Currently there is a native Android (4.0+) app and a universal webapp which can be used on any device with a modern internet browser, but the universal app is currently lacking a few features.
The mod is designed to be installed on the server only, but you can also install it on your Minecraft client and show informations while playing in a singleplayer world. It works in single and multiplayer.
The corresponding app can display serverinformations, like online players or motd, live player infomations, like health and foodlevel, worldinformations, like weather or time.
The most interestings parts are probably the following two:
The mod allows you to mark blocks with a label, then the app tells you whether this block is powered by redstone or not. So you can for example see on your phone if there are items in your mob farm or if your quarry (Buildcraft) is finished or whatever you can think of. You are also able to control marked levers in the world via your device.
The second most interesting feature is the inventory viewer, which allows you to view your inventory on your mobile device (At the moment it only shows your items in textform, and Android only).
There also will be support for other mods, as soon as more mods update to 1.7, suggestions welcome), currently there is only support for Thaumcraft, you can observe the aspect amount in nodes.
So all in all this app can be used in two situations:
1. While playing to show additional informations or to allow you to disable the ingame HUD.
2. While beeing not on the server to show informations about the world or other players.
I´m still working on the mod and the app, which doesn´t look great yet.
I would love to get some feedback or suggestions what I could improve or implement.
The mod is currently available for 1.7 and 1.8, the 1.8 version does not support any other mods yet, since they are not updated to 1.8.
The mods source code is available under LGPL licence on Github. I look forward to some pull requests, since this is my first Minecraft mod, there is probably some stuff that can be improved.
You also may create your own client applications and publish them wherever you want, the protocoll can be found at de / maxgb / minecraft / second_screen / shared and I will try to assist you.
IMPORTANT NOTICE:
The universal app is a ALPHA, I have not tested it very much and there may be some problems. Please report any problems to me so I can fix them.
The universal app is currently pretty ugly and not that comfortable to use, I firstly focused on implementing the features, in the future I will redesign the app, if I get enough feedback.
Guys give this more attention! This seems like a really cool mod, though I don't use smartphone apps, this seems like it could be extremely useful and convenient for those who do.
Unfortunatly I wont have that much time in the next two weeks to work on an universal version, but afterwards I should have plenty of time.
I´m still hoping, that I get at least some feedback from Android users till then.
Ok, I started working on an universal version today.
The changes to the mod itself are almost done, now I have to start to create the app itself.
For those interested I´m using Intel´s XDK.
I have no idea how long it will take, since I did not work with JS and webapps that much yet, but I will probably have plenty of time in the next weeks.
In the meantime I'm still waiting for some feedback from Android users, so please tell your friends or anyone who might be interested in this to check this mod out, thanks.
So, I finished a first alpha version of the app.
It works for me, but doesn't look very good, it also may not be that comfortable to use at the moment.
Please tell me if you have any problems or suggestions what should be improved.
Currently it is a webapp, I may publish some native versions as well.
More informations in the main post.
The universal version needs at least the 0.9 version of the mod, the Android only version only works with 0.2.7, but I will make it compatible with the newer versions, till then you can either use the older version or use the universal version on Android as well.
So I uploaded a update (0.9.4) which allows you to obeserve any inventory (chest, furnace, etc.) with the /mss observer command. It currently is only displayed in the universal app (Android will follow). You might have to reload the page/app multiple times.
Important: Many people tell me that this mod is awesome, but I unfortunatly don't get any other feedback, like feature requests, bug reports or anything else. Without that it is not that much fun developing this and without some ideas on the universal version I cannot improve or rewrite it. So until I hear something from you guys, I wont extend/improve the universal version, and all updates will be exclusive to the Android version which I'm using myself. So please tell me stuff ;). Maxanier
Finished version 1.0 of this mod.You can now observe: Any inventory, any tank, any Redstone Flux storage container and Thaumcraft nodes!
You can have a better chat via second screen experience!
You can experience mutliple minor enhancements!
You can use it under MC 1.7.2 and 1.7.10
Downloads link in main post.
Finished version 1.0 fo the Android app.You can experience the new observers or enhancements on your Androiddevice
Available on Play Store see main post.
The universal app works with the update, but does not support all new features. See post above.
Made a little update which allows you to see extended player informations like direction, biome, block light level, etc as seen on the debug/f3 screen.
Just download mod version 1.1.40 or higher (1.7 only).
In the Android app you can deactivate this feature, in the universal one you can always see the informations in the playerinfo tab-
the update for 1.8 has to wait until there is a stable version of Minecraft Forge for MC1.8 :(. But as soon as that is released, i will update this mod which should not take long
I updated the Mod for Minecraft 1.8 (1.8.1 will follow as soon as forge is updated).
Everything should work as before, but if you find any issue please let me know.
Thaumcraft and redstone flux are not yet supported since they are not updated to 1.8.
Is there a chance we will sometimes be able to use this mod on spigot 1.8 ? I like your great idea
I don't exactly no what spigot is, but as far I can tell it is an extension of craftbukkit which usually doesn't work with forge mods, and I won't make this mod a bukkit plugin for the forseeable future. Sorry

As always give me some feedback on this and report any bug you can find.
Hope that helps
You dont need to have the mod installed on your client if you want to connect to a server using it.
I forgot to implement that in 1.0.0, but the newer 1.0.1 as well as the versions below 0.9.5 support that.
Just download mod version 1.1.40 or higher (1.7 only).
In the Android app you can deactivate this feature, in the universal one you can always see the informations in the playerinfo tab-
Now players receive a manual at first spawn, so they know that this mod is installed and how to make use of it.
Should be pretty usefull for modpack creators or server owners with a lot of players.
1.8 is coming soon I hope for this mod, but as it is is STILL AMAZING

Or is spigot something else?
