I wasn't sure where to put this, so if it's in the wrong place, I apologize.
But what I want to know, is why were there so many snapshots for the servers anymore that don't include .exe files?
I play on a PC and have never had any luck in using the .jar files, I just get a brief black input screen that pops up for a couple of seconds, then goes away, and nothing launches. I'm starting to feel a little like Minecraft is becoming unfriendly to PC users.
I've also heard people say you can some how change the .jars to .exe, but I can't seem to rename mine, and every time I try to look up how to solve this problem, or even how to use a .jar, I feel like I just get the run around, and no one is willing to give /actual/ answers, rather then just 'blah blah blah'. I have been trying to figure out how to run these newer snapshots for months, I've been stuck on 1.7.9 since it came out, but I seem to be having no luck with finding a solution.
Could some one please, please, please tell me how to actually get the .jars to work on a PC, or at least point me to something that /actually/ contains a solution, not just a bunch of text that solves nothing.
I'm getting super frustrated, and frankly, losing interest in this aspect of mine craft, as it seems to be very PC unfriendly.
I got the run prompt box to come up, but got this error:
D:\5Programs\Minecraft\Minecraft Server>java -Xmx1G -Xms5G -jar minecraft_server
.14w11b.jar -o true
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Incompatible minimum and maximum heap sizes specified
D:\5Programs\Minecraft\Minecraft Server>pause
Press any key to continue . . .
Does anyone know how to make it work? This is the closest I have gotten so far.
D:\5Programs\Minecraft\Minecraft Server>java -Xmx1G -Xms5G -jar minecraft_server
.14w11b.jar -o true
Error occurred during initialization of VM
Incompatible minimum and maximum heap sizes specified
Because on some machines or versions of java G doesnt work and even if that was the case the -Xms is larger than the -Xmx would still throw an error, its trying to assign 5Gb of starting memory but the -Xmx is low and the server could only use 1Gb of Memory.
Try this:
java -Xms512M -Xmx1024M -jar minecraft_server.jar
That should work
-Xms is the Minimum Amount in RAM ( Megabytes) you wish to give the server and -Xmx is the Maximum amount you wish to give to the server to use, the amount it uses is dynamic between the Minimum and Maximum Values specified
You can then if you havent, put this in a text file and save as to a .bat file and you will not have to type it every time you want the start the server and make sure its in the folder where the jar is.
Assuming that this is a Vanilla Server aswell.

Oh derp....for one, I totally missed that I put the values in in the wrong order. For second, I agree with gerbil...it doesn't help that it's written in the wrong order to begin with.
And haha about the spelling errors, Energritz, I do that all of the time, some times as bad as typing letters in the wrong order. It's even worse now that my space bar sticks. XP
And thank you! It looked like this works! I thought it wasn't going to at first, cause when I clicked on it, it said it could not access the .jar file I told it to look for, but then I double clicked the assigned .jar file, and it came up fine. Now to test run and make sure it is working proper. So to run future ones (unless they change something major?) I should just put them into this .bat model?
And thank you again so much! I've been nearly frustrated to the point of yelling, or tears with scouring the internet and coming up with either no answer, or answers that did not work, and programs that I had even less clue how to use.
It's sad to think some times that all it takes is such a tiny string of code, but if you don't know what you are doing, you could spend months wondering in the dark.

Desperately in need of assistance,

I typed in, according to the directions:
java -Xmx1G -Xms5G -jar minecraft_server.14w11b.jar -o true
pause
I got the run prompt box to come up, but got this error:

Sure. I"m pretty sure that the snapshots never come as executables.
