I was really hoping that the anvil would eliminate this or a need for it anyway ,why are the costs so high?
Why is it when i try to repair a fortune 3, speed 4, endurance 3, diamond pick, with a brand new diamond pick does it say " too expensive"?
Also I have heard that naming your tool reduces cost in xp , is this true ?
Repairing said pick seems to cost around 4 diamonds and 112 xp levels ........... seriously ...... why?....... am I missing something here I have read the wiki and as i understand it everything you do makes it cost more even multiple repairs
Perhaps I am way off base here and am wrong will someone with knowledge please chime in !
It's much cheaper to put 30 levels on a pick to get your same enchantments by saving fist before enchanting and if you don't get the enchantments you want, quit without saving and reload. Rinse and repeat. Anvils, due to their outrageously high level coasts, are worthless and a waste of time.

Not for us map makers. That thing is a blessing of variety!
As for the survival aspect, I haven't dabbled in it too much.
I was able to make a Sharpness V sword and Power V Bow.
It really depends on what you're adding and to what.
Whats funny is if you try to repair an iron pickaxe it costs 4 iron!!! Hmmm? levels and 4 iron to repair or no levels and 3 iron for a new one? lol makes sense to me......

Yeah, things can get expensive.. And you're right about multiple repairs. The more you repair something, the more it costs. Every time you repair a tool or weapon it costs 2 levels for each previous repair/combination. So repairing a tool 5 times costs 10 extra levels the sixth time you go to repair it..
BUT.. there is a way to cap the cost. Rename it. Renaming an item caps the prior work penalty at 2 levels. This will allow you to keep your favorite tool pretty much forever.

Dude.. I have to totally disagree with you here. Sorry.:/
Anvils totally eliminate any reason to save and reload in my opinion. Let's just put aside that saving and reloading is borderline cheating(Which is totally my opinion.. feel free to have your own.:) ) you may as well just switch over to creative.
I think once you have a have decent xp farm or way of getting xp on a consistent basis an Anvil allows you to have the tools you need and want without playing the lottery with your 30 levels all the time. When you understand the mechanics behind it, it becomes easy to keep and build a good set of tools. Yeah, it'll cost you, but with a steady source of xp that's not a big deal.
I have to agree with RenegadeFade. I much rather prefer going completely vanilla and not use the save "cheat". Having a decent XP farm allows you to, with a little work, get level 30 quickly. I use my anvil right next to my Enderman farm and all I enchant are books. Then, I can pick and choose what goes on what. Just keep in mind that books are not the best thing to enchant because their enchantability level is low. But you eventually get some cool stuff.
Ok maybe I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure you can get only one enchantment from a book. I'd prefer efficiency 4 and fortune 3
You are correct, only one enchantment per book. Plus you can't combine books. All that good stuff should come later. However, you can still add multiple books to the same item.
Your better off enchanting at level 30 then use the enchantment books.
Exactly, save then enchant. If it is not what you want, repeat until desired enhancements is achieved. (I don't see it as cheating though nor does 4J) Then hit your sword with an Unbreaking III book!

I know it's not cheating. I put it in quotes because it's something I turn away from. I have a general rule of thumb: If I can't do it on PC then I don't do it at all, given the option of course. Now, I mean vanilla PC with no world save backups, no mods, etc. Trying to stay true to Minecraft is all.
One of the hardest things to work with when enchanting or repairing is diamond gear. It can get too expensive really fast. Renaming at the beginning should negate future expense but the more you repair the higher the cost goes. Each "work" done adds a cost to the next work and it accumulates to the point where no combination of items will work. At least now diamond gear is renewable thanks to trading so worst case scenario, you can always buy a new diamond-whatever and start fresh.

Yeah but I like to pick and choose. Trust me, it's taking me a long time to get even the most descent stuff on books but I'm still stock piling them.
