I've had Minecraft for a few months now and I am still enjoying it. Now I'd like to try out new skins and perhaps a few mods but I've heard stories that some mods or skins can corrupt the Minecraft game and/or save data. Are these stories true? If there's a chance of buggering up my game with a mod or skin, I'm not going to chance it. Also, can I make a mod or skin exclusive to a single save file/minecraft world?
Skins can't do anything to the minecraft code, but mods can, but most mods (especially mods made my an experienced modder/mod team who care about their players) will not mess up anything up (with the exception of achevment data being erased) unless you use two or more mods that are not compatible with each other. Most of them time make sure you are downloading mods from trustworthy websites and if you do want to use two mods at once make sure they're comparable and if you're not sure make a new world to try them out in and if you're still afraid for your saves back them up.

If you are going to use a mod that changes world generation, start a new world and use it.
Opening a world made in unmodded client then used with a world generation mod might corrupt the world.
As far as I knows kins cannot corrupt your data.
Skins don't corrupt the worlds, they do stuff to the player, not your worlds. Mods can, so be sure to duplicate your minecraft 1.whatever folder and install Forge/modloader and some mods on that, and test out the game, be sure to create a new world so you get the structures, dimensions, and mobs; old worlds will NOT WORK.
Skins just change how you look, nothing more (look on Planet Minecraft for the better skins) Mods USUALLY don't corrupt things, but its possible. The most common mod problem is crashes, if your game crashes, just restart and don't do what you did last time to make the game crash, if you restart and it crashes again, uninstall the mod, and if you want; reinstall it.
