I've been recording Minecraft videos for a little bit over a year and I'm looking to expand my audience... I was wondering if you guys had any ideas for an entertaining Minecraft series that would get views? Maybe something original?
Basically, the problem with most Let’s Plays I see in this section is that they are the same old thing. Youtube says there are About 17,500,000 results for Minecraft, and About 4,510 results for “Vanilla Minecraft Let’s Play Part 1” in the last 24 hours. (Granted, not all of them actually fit the bill. But even if only 1% of them fit the bill, and if you are in the top 99% of youtubers in terms of skill level at youtubing, then in a day there will be plenty more let's play series that are better than yours. That's what you are up against.) It seems to me that the most successful youtubers are the ones who do something that isn’t just the normal vanilla minecraft let’s play.
Now, let’s look at something more original. There are probably about 100 results for “Minecraft ICBM Mod War”, “Minecraft Cold War”, and “Minecraft Nuclear War” combined in the past week. Only about half are actually anywhere near what I’m searching for. There are probably a ton of duplicates too. Not much competition, but tons of demand.
If you do something new, that's what draws me in. Once you have viewers, you can sort of surf the wave upward. Here's some ideas.
- Modded server series featuring a storyline about an alien invasion and Minecraftia's desperate attempts to rally and defend itself. - A sky-pirate series using Metaworlds or archimedes’s ships or such with a crew of pirates taking on other vessels. Could be a storyline or a pvp map series. - A fake "company" in FTB. Each video would be advertising a specific product, from nuclear missile turtles to floating castles. - Two teams, ICBM mod installed. Cold war ensues. (The finale of that series will be fun) - Recreate popular games in Minecraft maps, from temple run to Skyrim. - Recreate battles in history using minecraft as a medium. - PVP battles on arenas you or your friends have made. Obviously don’t just play others maps, make your own! - Pig Grand Prix: Each episode, some players get together to do a new course of pig racing. From rainbow-road-esque highways to the nether, get your pig to the finish first. - A spy movie in minecraft. You could really take this any way you want, but if you had maybe 5 people to play the bad guys, you could do something really awesome with grappling hooks and air ducts. I don't know. - Build underwater, or in the sky, or entirely belowground, or something like that.
Basically, new things do better. "mai bestest survivl minecraft!" isn't that interesting to me anymore. In addition, do things that have value to you. If you hate redstone, don't even try to make a channel about redstone inventions. It just won't work. If you love PVP, work PVP into your series. Think about your favorite movies, tv shows, and books, and think about how you can translate the things you love about those works into minecraft.
For example, I love the feeling of a living world that fantasy and steampunk worlds convey, which translates well into minecraft. I love the idea of discovery, and air battles. If I was to do a let's play, it would be me and my friends as sky pirates, raiding the ships of the sky and becoming the most feared airmen to sail the air. In order to do that, I would need metaworlds mod or archimedes' ships or something, a group of friends, and people to raid. Then I'd start thinking about how I'd go about getting those things in order, etc. That's just me.
As you can probably tell, I'm a fan of roleplaying and scripts. But that doesn't mean you have to be. Maybe you would enjoy doing a let's play of a adventure map, or a mod review, or even make your own mods? I really don't know. Play to your strengths: If you are good at comedy, do comedy, and so on.

Ugh. I forgot how bad this post was. I'll fix it up soon. I hope it at least makes some sense.

I feel like I'm spamming each time I post this, but I think it has value. This is what I've observed. Sorry in advance for the huge wall of text. Ugh. I forgot how bad this post was. I'll fix it up soon. I hope it at least makes some sense.

I really loved your ideas Ducky! And everyone else, I am planning on doing a Minecraft Series (Maybe modded?) and having a deep back story. Think, a solo version of Shadow of Israphel... I'm curious on how to execute something like that though. Ideas?
Let me start off by saying, I don't know the answer, but here are my two cents.
0) I think that adventure maps are a good idea, doing a two man is probably better because then the back and forth communication during the play makes it more interesting.
1) If you start a series, commit to it. Try to make regular videos for that series so that viewers will become invested in the series.
2) Don't make 3 or 4 series all at once, you'll lose focus on what you're trying to do.
3) Find something that you love to do. You'll be much more enthusiastic in your videos if you're doing a video you're excited about. Sometimes you'll see videos where the filmer seems bored. If the person filming the episode is bored, what are we supposed to think.
4) Recording quality. Try to keep the audio as clean as possible.
5) Purpose. Stay focused in the video on what you're doing. If it takes you 6 minutes to place a door to a house, you just wasted 5:50 seconds of time.
6) Finally, don't get discouraged. Most likely you'll never become rich and famous making Minecraft videos, do it because you enjoy it.

Good idea. Added to story!
Just kidding. That's already a series. You've seen An Egg's Guide to Minecraft, right?
But seriously, parody music videos are usually cool when they're Minecraft parodies. What's your favorite music video or song?

haven't seen a sea-themed adventure yet
there are some ship mods around, and some terrain generators.... shouldn't be hard to find a suitable modpack.
of course, the real appeal would be to have several players as a team.... a solo play may be kinda boring.
