Do not skip if, you haven't posted on suggestion forum before/are a noob
It has come to my attentions that the rules on suggestion forum posting fairly weak, so firstly I present an easy to understand guide on the basics:

You should always consider that the game is unfinished and try to make sure your suggestion to fit a/the complete game instead of the current state of the game.

It is often a good Idea to search and publish your ideas on http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang as well, so you can get a exact numbers on how much support you have and make you easier to notice.

rmhFAVDDTOA
Note: If search is not working click on via Google on the search page and add your search terms after site:minecraftforum.net in the Google search bar.

It doesn't matter if your idea is the same, read the searched threads anyway. If it turns out everyone hates it, don't post it. It will save you a lot of grief.

Warning : Some users get annoyed by threads which don't follow these rules, and may be blunt with their replies. Take it in stride and concentrate on making a well thought-out idea. NO idea is safe from criticism, and NO idea is safe from opinions.

For Non-noobs
Right now that's cleared up I'd like to move onto the real issue at hand, Some general rules for, checking a suggestion against or criticizing a suggestion, without specifically analyzing individual suggestions.

So I present the following rules for what a suggestion must contain/involve:

- Uniqueness - Minecraft shouldn't just copy other games, Minecraft is one of the most original games ever.

- Simplicity - If something can be done in less mobs, material or blocks, why bother?

- Balance - This is something that is needed in all games.

- Challenge - If it is too easy, it is too boring, generally a good rule and one followed by Notch himself.

- Creativity - If an addition doesn't add than just itself, it doesn't belong in Minecraft vanilla.

- Innovation - It has to do something different or new.

I am sure these rules could be refined and/or new ones added as these are mostly just a result of my opinion.

Although I have done my best to emulate the vision notch has for Minecraft [perhaps a little input from the Mojang team or Notch himself (although I seriously doubt it) wouldn't go amiss]

Seems good, you should also add the search precaution onto there.

Trollcalling is the act of trying to convince other users that a poster is a troll and/or accusing other users of being trolls. This is a bannable offense. Please report trolling, do not advertise it or react to it.

Done and dusted.

Also, no comments on the non-noob section?

projected balance. It has to not only balance with the game as it seems to be, but the person needs to consider how a complete minecraft game might be like, considering that zombies will probably not continue to drop feathers, there will probably be more mobs, etc. Anicipated anti-redundancy

What? I'm entirely sure I understand what you mean.

Are suggesting not suggesting thing that are in all likelihood going to change anyway, such as glitches?

nope. Just saying that when people suggest certain things, they should consider that the game is unfinished and try to model their suggestion to fit a complete game instead of the current state of the game

I added just before the guide pic but I'm not too sure about the phrasing, it needs to be simple and easy to understand, I want to make sure that this guide means anyone can feel comfortable making a suggestion without feeling an idiot afterwards.

eh, just ignore what I said, if people start taking posting reasonably in the ways you mentioned, things are going to change. I can feel it.

This pleases me.

Might want to add in something specific about taking criticism, considering how many fail at that...And not arguing with muncher, because that never ends well XD

Also adding a comment here want stop certain posters trollishness

Also I'm sure a list of trolls would be better in its own thread.

I believe this should be stickied.

The problem is the knowledge that even if this is stickied, people will simply ignore it.

There is no patch for the human condition; and even a rigorous warn/ban from an active mod will do nothing but spread negative word-of-mouth about the site in general.

I agree with everything in this statement.

While I enjoy and prefer the ideals of being nice; my patience runs thin when even my nicest declinations and counterpoints are met with "STFU, OMG UR A TROLL."

I've posted over 2000 messages and seen over 10,000 topics; I tire of being nice when I do not get the same treatment in return. It's little wonder that people like Ygdrasel and Muncher21 (as prime suspects) speak with such strong language of disgust (it's also little wonder that I'm shoe-horned into the group).

People will be people and I agree with everything here; but I am pessimistic about it's ability to bleed intelligence from the drooling masses.

Also the forums should not be treated as your own personal blog.

No "Today I woke up and found a cave, isn't that awesome?"

Done but this is getting a bit long *sigh* even if new users do notice it, they might not bother reading it.

Even if this does help it won't be enough, but I think the only way to truly fix this is to completely reformat the suggestion forum. i.e. making a new new topic form that forces you to go through all these steps and procedure but that probably isn't going to happen or adding a way to easily merge threads.

Its said because lots of good ideas drown in a sea of duplicate threads, badly done ideas and wish lists. And its even worse for good idea that don't manage to get a foothold.

What is even worse is that those people that post endless piles of tripe, also fill the good threads with support and comments so banning offenders wouldn't help. However If we don't do something then this board will be ignored and all the good ideas therein. And considering how Minecraft's success is due to the power of word-of-mouth its important we don't ignore it.
