100+, when I went AFK at my zombie spawner farm before going to bed. Other than that, I usually don't let it get above 40, because it's such a huge waste of XP.
It takes the same amount of XP orbs for each level up to 16, but after that, it takes more and more for each level. So "banking" XP in high experience levels is actually a big waste.
Going from 0-16 requires 272 orbs. 16-30 requires an additional 553 orbs (more than twice what it took to get to 16) for a grand total of 825 orbs. Going from 30-40 requires an additional 935 orbs (more than it took to go from 0-30). So to go from 0-40 requires a whopping 1,760 orbs!
Yes, it takes more orbs to go from 0-40 than it does to go 0-30 twice!
This is why you really should not let your experience level get too high. Enchant books, repair armor or tools, or even just rename something. You'll waste less XP than you will by holding on to excessively high experience levels.
I got 82 levels once, from mining Nether quartz, which is a very good way to get lots of XP (about 236 ore to go from 0-30); I mine it to get XP for enchanting, except on my last trip I mined quartz until my pickaxe (Unbreaking III diamond) was about to break (a waste of XP perhaps, but only really a waste if you actually need to use the XP for something).
Otherwise, I regularly reach 40-45 levels between repairs of my pickaxe, which needs to be repaired every 90 minutes or so for 37 levels (XP from simply mining and killing mobs in caves; as noted above, getting more XP than needed isn't a problem unless you actually need it, in this case saving diamonds (and anvils) by only repairing when durability remains below 100% after repairing).
Also, I'm wondering what the highest score (cumulative XP) anybody has gotten; I currently have 108,453 (normally only viewable on death but I modded the game to display the score in the inventory screen; you can also use NBTExplorer, etc to view it), although at least one person has nearly 300,000 - in hardcore (and probably got much higher as they used NBTExplorer, etc to see their score without dying).
I got up to 65 recently, just killing vanilla mobs, smelting and fishing. I lived for a really long time without dying and I looked down at my EXP bar one day and it was ridiculous. I was sad when I dived off a cliff and lost it all.

Mine's 10. Don't judge me.
Can we not right now?
I had 13 levels BEFORE so I got 105 levels. Wow.

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
