I don't mod Minecraft anymore ; thus, those mods are provided as is, and I won't give any support for it anymore. Have fun using them anyway !
Please note that Randomobs WILL WORK with any version of the game.
Balthichou's and PlumPlonk's mods :
Hi there. We're a french modders duet, and we enjoy little modifications which do not take over the whole game. We try to do nice-looking mods, which don't alter gameplay to much. PlumPlonk is the main artist / texture maker, and I do the coding. Of course, we've had help from other modders from time to time, so make sure you check the credits !
Mods we've made so far :
Randomobs 4.3 : If you're bored of clone animals, this mod is for you ! It brings visual variety to the game, by making mobs be able to spawn with different textures. Its source code recently got included in MCPatcher, meaning its texture library is easily customizable for texture pack makers and users. Be sure to check it out ! Working on EVERY SINGLE VERSION.
Haycraft 1.3 : Ever wanted to live in a thatched cottage ? Now, with Haystacks, it's possible ! This mod allows you to craft haystack blocks using wheat. You can now make perfect roof, or just nice-looking wheat storage. And there is wattle and daub for walls too ! NO LONGER SUPPORTED.
Well, now I shall let you visit our page. If you got any question or suggestion, just drop us a word right here ! We'll answer you the best we can.
Hi everyone, I'm here to share what was our very first mod.
Tired of seeing always the same cows, pigs, chickens and zombies ? You installed a texture pack, yet seeing always clones seems kinda strange... Then Randomobs is for you ! *insert advertisement jingle here*
The code of the mod is now part of MCPatcher, meaning patching your jar is enough if you're using a texture pack ! We'll keep this page as a general FAQ, as well as a download page for the skins fitting vanilla textures.
Please note : it doesn't mean you can just patch your jar and it will work. You still need textures, wether you get them from a supporting texture pack, or from here for vanilla fitting texture.
Randomobs 4.3 By Balthichou & PlumPlonk !
So, to be simple : this mod will force the game to pick a random texture for the mobs between several ones : pigs, chickens, skeletons, zombies, every mobs. Without this mod, there were only one cow race in your game ; now, there'll as many as you want !
And more of all, it's totally and easily customizable !
I'll keep it updated, so stay tuned ! And if you have any suggestion, go on, after all it's our first mod.

Requirements :
Minecraft corresponding version (from beta 1.7 and forth : see the "Download links"). MCPatcher : get ithere ! If you're using a pre-3.0 version of Randomobs (pre-1.8.1 Minecraft), you need PReader by Roundaround. Since he decided not to distribute the old version anymore, and we still need the old version, here is a rehosted one : LINK.
The base of the mod is now part of MCPatcher. All we now ditribute are the skins for the mobs, so have fun ! We'll go on creating new skins so that your mobs are always more different !
Download links : Every single version of Minecraft post 1.7.3, 4.3 version : LINK.Mirror : LINK. beta 1.7.3 compatible, 2.6 version : LINK.
Installation :
If you have no texture pack, or if it doesn't support Randomobs :
1. Locate your minecraft bin. There are tons of tutorials about this around. 2. Patch your minecraft.jar using MCPatcher, and make sure you checked the Random Mobs little box.
3. Put the textures you downloaded into the corresponding mob's folder in your minecraft.jar.
4. Run Minecraft, and enjoy. Note : On some computers, a "macosx" or "DS_Store" file appears : it's because I work on Mac OS X. They are trash files, you can delete them without any problems ; all you need are the textures.
If your texture pack supports Randomobs : 1. Patch your minecraft.jar using the latest MCPatcher, and make sure you checked the Randomobs box.
2. Launch Minceraft, choose your texture pack, and enjoy !
Supporting texture packs :
We got awesome texture packs to support Randomobs ! Which one will you pick ?
Wolfcraft, by TheMadWolf ! Such good 32x texture packs are rare, so make sure you give it a try !
Glimmar's Steampunk, by Glimmar ! Bringing steam and copper into a victorian Minecraft. Wonderful old chap, I say.
64x :
Misa's Realistic Pack, by Misa ! That was one of the first packs to support Randomobs, and it still does.
Traditional Beauty, by BlowJoe ! The original Minecraft spirit, now HD. Check this out !
128x :
Sphax PureBDCraft, by Sphax. Be sure you checked out this amazing texture pack, available in every resolution !
Sunshine Vector, by aussie_modder. Another vectorial pack in the line of descent of Sphax PureBDCraft. Give it a try, it really looks good !
If you didn't find what you want, have a look at the Randomobs Texture Trade ! You might find that special something !
If you want your texture pack to be featured here, just drop me a PM !
Conflicts :
Spoiler:
Modloader isn't needed, but is totally compatible.
This mod mainly edits the RenderLiving.class, Entity.class and EntityLiving.class (dt.class, kj.class and wd.class on 1.8.1). It also edits a few other classes since it's part of MCPatcher, but they're unlikely to conflict..
This mod is compatible with Optifine. If you check only the "Randomobs" box from MCPatcher, and not the HD textures / font, you can run Optifine just fine (heh).
If you want to use MCPatcher's HD textures / font, Randomobs and Optifine... Well... I'll quote DanielCoffey here :

OPTIFINE COMPATIBLE!
I can confirm that the version of Randomobs which is incorporated into MCPatcher is fully compatible with OptiFine under the following circumstances...
1. CLEAN Minecraft.jar freshly downloaded.
2. Download and run MCPatcher 2.2.3, accepting the default options (HD Texture, Font and Randomobs ticked).
3. Optional - download your preferred multi-skin texture pack (I used Misa's 64x) and drop into the Minecraft texture packs folder.
4. Download OptiFine and copy all the files into your minecraft .jar EXCEPT zh.class and abe.class - THIS IS IMPORTANT!
5. Run Minecraft and select your texture pack if you installed one.
6. Choose your preferred OptiFine graphics settings.
Well done folks - it was well worth the wait!
This mod is compatible with MinecraftForge. Just be sure to follow a special installation. I'll quote pwnedgod here :

Ok should say Forge is really compatible with Randomobs(even though forge replaces some files). here's the steps:
1. In MCPatcher. Put forge on the priority after Modloader and modloadermp(obviously)
2. Check Random mobs
3. Patch.
4. try the game.
5. PROFIT
a proof of forge and Random mobs compatible
Note the redpower alloy wire in the hotbar, The sequencer logic gate, and the volcano from redpower.

FAQ :
Spoiler:
Are my saves safe ?
Randomobs is a save-friendly mod : if you don't want it anymore, get a fresh minecraft.jar. Your saves will be alright !
Is it SMP compatible ?
It's a client-side mod, meaning that it will work if you play in SMP !
The download link seems broken.
Empty your cache, delete your cookies, then try again.
In the downloads, there are only skins, no class files.
That's because the code got included in MCPatcher, so texture pack support is easier. Read the installation part for more information.
Isn't it in MCPatcher already ?
Not exactly. What is in MCPatcher is the code for Randomobs ; if you only patch your game, you won't see any different-textured animals. So, unless you use a supporting texture pack, you'd better download the skins we offer here !
I got a black screen / My game crashes.
You may have installed a mod which is in conflict. Tell us which mods you are using.
I've patched my game with MCPatcher, but the mobs are normal...
Maybe you forgot to install the textures provided here ? MCPatcher is the code, so you'll still need the textures.
I'm using [insert texture pack name here], which supports Randomobs, but the mobs are low-rez, white or not randomized...
Here is the solution : get a fresh minecraft.jar, launch the game, quit it, patch it, launch the game again, choose your texture pack before opening a world and then open a world. Mobs should be randomized now.
How to change the skins ? Add some ? Delete others ? If I am a modder / texture pack maker, how can I add Randomobs support ?
The mod automatically check which skins are in your mob folder. However, you have to get the right numbers : pig.png, pig2.png, pig3.png, if you want to use 3 textures. pig.png, pig7.png and pig78.png won't work !
So feel free to add, replace and delete the textures, just make sure you have the right numbers.
If you're a modder or a texture pack maker, just add numbers after the skins. For example, if you created a mod which adds cats to the game, naming skins cat.png, cat2.png, cat3.png will make three different textured cats. If you're making a texture pack and want 7 zombies, their name should be zombie.png, zombie2.png, zombie3.png, zombie4.png, zombie5.png, zombie6.png, and zombie7.png.
Please note that the ghast textures work two by two, meaning that ghast_fire3.png is the firing version of ghast3.png. Take it into consideration while customizing your mobs. Wolves textures work three by three.

Balthichou (me, yeah !) for the original idea, a few skins, and coding.
PlumPlonk for banners, graphics, and most of the skins.
Kahr, who made MCPatcher. we have to thank him for including Randomobs in it !
LostKingpin, who's been supporting Randomobs by using it in his mods since the very first releases.
Special thanks to Anthony3597 for helping us in the earlier months of the mod, especially about setting up the PReader thing, to Eldalar who make most of the work about the automatic version, and all the modders who helped to update : LostKingpin, Roxicodine, and above all, the wonderful Laurina, whom we owe an update.
All the other moders who helped, Kamren28 and OgreSean Builder's Mod for it's random skin code part from I inspired myself the members of the #risucraft IRC channel for their good advices, Roundaround whom we had included PReader.
People that keep doing texture packs that are compatible with Randomobs, or making video spotlights : it feels really, really good when you see people working with what you did.

Haycraft 1.3 By Balthichou !
Well, wheat is pretty much useless in Minecraft. Once you made bread and cake, your huge farms are nothing but a playground for chickens. You can still feed animals with it, but we're still far from the wide usefulness this cereal had in the history of peasants.
What does this mod do ? Well, with Haycraft you're now allowed to craft haystack blocks, which are compacted solid wheat. You can use them as a storage, building material for roofs and wall, or just decoration in your farms.

The mod put in a nutshell.
Features and recipes :
This mod adds four blocks to the game : haystack blocks, haystack slabs and haystacks stairs. Wattle and daub can be crafted with sticks, wheat and dirt, to make genuine farm walls. You may also find a needle in a haystack ! Here are the crafting recipes :
Oh, and of course, haystack blocks are craftable in one wheat again.
Requirements :
Minecraft 1.0.0. ModLoader : get ithere!
1. Locate your minecraft bin. There are tons of tutorials about this around. 2. Open it and put the files from ModLoader in it.
3. Delete your META-INF folder.
4. Download Haystacks. Put the class files and the "haycraft" folder into your minecraft.jar, right where you put the ModLoader files.
5. Run Minecraft, and enjoy. Note : On some computers, a "macosx" or "DS_Store" file appears : it's because I work on Mac OS X. They are trash files, you can delete them without any problems ; all you need are the class files and the textures.
Supporting texture packs :
You want Haycraft to fit your favorite texture pack, right ? Well, let's see if you find what you want here !
64x :
Misa's Realistic Pack, by Misa ! Though she didn't included the textures in her pack, she made some for her personal use. They were replacing bricks so she could make beautiful buildings, and I told her I could make it into a mod. Long story short, here are the textures she made : Misa's support for Haycraft. To install it, open the zip of her texture pack, drag'n drop the "haycraft" folder in it, rezip it and go as usual.
If you want your texture pack to be featured here, just drop me a PM !

It's only my first mob for now, so I'm a bit lost. But I'll do the same for every other mobs... So yeah, I'll give a look to the wolf customization.
But I don't want player to be able to change the skin of the mobs manually ; i want it to be as random as possible, so that when a grey cow spawns, it will stay a grey cow.
But I may try to give it a random size too !
Next mob to be randomizad will be pigs, then sheeps, then chickens. I'll then try hostile mobs (omagad, headless zombies !)
Wow. This is actually a great idea in my opinion. You should add Property Reader to this so people can share their own textures, and make their own textures. =D
EDIT: Also, you should do this for ores, so they don't all look exactly the same.

Yeah, I'll make agressive mobs too, so that you'll have, for instance, armless zombies, or some with riped-off shirts.
Property Reader ? I may look into it, but for now I try to stay kinda simple. I'm doing passive mobs first, because they are easier to examine in-game !
So, if you guys have ideas for zombies, creepers and skeletons skins, I'm all ears.
EDIT : ores is a great idea ! I'll look further into it once I'll have done mobs.
Maybe biome-specific mobs? Dark or brown wolves in the forest, white ones in the 'arctic'? Yellow-brownish sand creepers? White spiders camping in the snow?
this is great, i'll definately pick this up once updated! add more support for more mobs as you said but dont mess wit hthe sizes! it will start being to strange! i love how simply but adds a great feel
keep it up
