They have a low spawn rate. It took me 3 hours to get about 5 wolves.

Just turn on peaceful mode and look carefully. I found 4 in like 30 minutes.

Yes they are in SMP too.  I got lucky and found 3 in < 5 minutes.  You have to look in forest or taiga biomes.

Just tamed two wolves in SMP - after searching for them for quite a while. As was stated above they seem to prefer forests so it's even harder to spot them. :)

Try loading a world with the seed Ausm, you should find they spawn quite well there.
Once you're used to spotting them in forests, try your normal map.

Snowy forests have the highest spawn rate.

Wow, this is happening to me too. I search everywhere in the forest of my WHOLE MineCraft world, and I can't find a single wolf. And I use MC Beta 1.4.

I start a new world and search, still no sign of wolves.

Am we really that unlucky?

What helps guys is putting torches all around! In my new world I had barely any torches inside a forest and only found one wolf in fifteen minutes, but when I went on my old world (which had thousands of torches around) I found a pack of four and a pack of seven after wandering around for five minutes!

I've been looking for about three hours and am still at loss as to where to find a wolf, even though I've looked through numerous forests and taigas. I checked the roaming minecraft file and found the sound files for wolves though, so it has definitely updated. Suppose I'll just keep looking!

Its kinda all luck, this one times I saw a huge pack of wolves (like 6) but I left all my bones (20) at home. I was gonna use them to grow my crops :). I cheated this one time with mcedit and added so many wolf spawners. Its annoying when 20-30 wolves keep pushing you around.
