Didn't see this suggested, and it seems that most suggestion threads in the first few pages are relatively derp, so I didn't want my idea associated with them. >_>
Why not store player pet skins online like the player skins? That way tamed wolves (and other animals in the future) would take on an appearance designated by the player, instead of having everyone's tamed wolves look identical.
This will be especially useful when (read if) there is a limit put on the number of animals you can tame. Having a custom skin would also help to feel more connected to the pet.
That's great for just differentiating pets for those that feel as if pets are just another tool provided by the game engine. Not for people who want an actual unique pet.
By that logic, dying your shirt a different color is enough of a custom skin. Some people like to have personality. Pizazz.
Only game community in the world that supports standardization over customization...
I am sad. ;;
A friend pointed out that I needed to explain better because he's too dense to understand. T_T
When you go online, other players may be using custom skins. These are stored online (http://www.minecraft.net/skin/) so that regardless of what server you go to, you will look like that, and other people will see you like that.
What I am suggesting is the same, but for your tamed critters. The skins will be stored online so that any creature YOU tame will look like the skin you upload, but creatures that other people tame will look like the skins THEY uploaded.
that sounds like a cool idea it wouldnt be to hard to setup a website for that purpose either if it isnt possible here or with the player skins on the main site
Being able to use your dye on your wolf hardly adds any personality.
"Hey, I've got a purple wolf." "Well what do you know, I do too. And so does that guy."
Just as stated in the OP, in much the same way that you show off your own original skin on your character, why not allow players to see your customized wolf as well? Screw just dying my wolf black. I want everyone to see that the wolves I tame are black with purple collars, gold clasps on their collars, a striped tail, and bright blue eyes.

I'm almost 100% positive that this have been suggested before but i'll suggest it again anyways
...but when you think about it...users can have more than one wolf, so does that mean they will all look the same?

I think a cap at a reasonable amount [7?] then creating a new sub-directory (/skin/Wolf or Companion or Pet). After entering said area of the website there would be X amount of spaces in UI allowing for a change of each skin which is applied once the Wolf/Pet is tamed.
Something along this line would allow customization without sacrificing to much, I guess a real problem would be server-side when the bandwidth is insane with data streaming from multiple users to apply the skins. I would make a mock-up page but I suck that stuff. The cap could be extended, etc.
Well in what I was thinking, it's more a way to differentiate your dogs from another players', assuming you both have a few, so multiple skins for SMP would be a bit much, but I don't see why multiple skins for SSP wouldn't be feasible.
Keeping the limit at 1 custom skin per type of animal tamed would keep server bandwidth usage down. Maybe once everything is fully optimized the multi-skin thing becomes more feasible.
yes, I agree. they should have custom skins in multiplayer. it would help tell one pet from another and which pet belongs to which player, especially if you have, like, 10 of 'em.
and the dye thing? what if you dont have any dye? and it might not help with defining which pet belongs to which player. "hey, i have a wolf with a green collar!" "great! so do i, and him, and him, and her!" yeah, colored collars won't help much. >_>
as for the skin idea, i wish i thought of it. have a diamond and a pig and a flint and timber to set fire to idiots. :smile.gif:
Very nice idea, I often get confused when my wolfies and a friend's get mixed.
But what if 2 players encounter a wild wolf? Which of the player's wolf skin would it have? It would be a bit weird if their skins just change when taming them, thats why dyes might be a better idea.
There's actually 3 different files that control what a wolf looks like.
wolf.png
wolf_angry.png wolf_tame.png
So the tame wolves have a different skin from the other two. Wouldn't be too hard to do. All wild and wild & angry wolves would look the same to all players (assuming they are using default skins). My suggestion would only affect the tame wolf skin.
I mean, dye is doable, but sort of derp. I get what you mean about it suddenly changing, but it could work, visibly. The wolves do give off a little particle effect when they're given a bone anyway. Magic!
It works this way so that wild wolves can look like whatever the player wants. It's irrelevant since they're wild. So if you had a texture pack that affects wild wolves, it wouldn't affect your tame wolves. So to each player, a wild wolf would look like THEIR wolf.png, while tamed wolves would look like the players' custom wolf skins.

Read THIS POST if you still don't get it.
Apologies if this has already been suggested. I am not good with the googles searches.
Mine :biggrin.gif: White wolf, blue eyes.

I support this.

Sorry, but honestly, I think that this is enough :I

I support Carrier Eagle
I support Power gloves
I support Coal Powered carts delay
Probably. Trying to have a bunch of different ones just needlessly complicates it further.

+1
Actually a really good use for dyes.

Then why not try posting in a thread that suggests dyed wolves instead of making useless posts here?
Thanks, Flintlox!
