Falling through a nether portal, you are trying to get back through it when a Ghast fireballs it into oblivion. Stuck with only limited supplies, you have to find the resources to relight it, and hopefully not die too much in the process.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
In this challenge, you have to gather the materials for a Fire Charge in the Nether:
- Blaze powder --> from a Blaze!
- Charcoal --> from a Wither Skeleton!
- Gunpowder --> from a Ghast!
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Start off by making a nether portal at the spawn, and breaking it in the Nether. No way back until the end now!
Rules:
1) No relighting the portal with a Ghast fireball.
2) No other supplies.
3) Only play on Easy or above difficulties (otherwise it's impossible )
If you die, just relight the portal briefly, step through, and break it again.
....or just use /gamerule keepInventory if you don't want to start over
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Optional Challenges:
1) Get a blaze rod, make a brewing stand, and make potions of:
-Regeneration (Blaze powder/Ghast Tear/Netherwart, then Ghast Tear)
-Strength (Blaze powder/Ghast Tear/Netherwart, Blaze Powder)
-Fire Resistance (Blaze powder/Ghast Tear/Netherwart, Magma Cream)
*note: bring in water bottles*
2) Kill zombie pigmen for enough gold to make a gold sword, then do the original challenge.
3) Get a wither skeleton skull, and wear it.
4) Disable a blaze spawner with glowstone.
It's a very original idea, and makes use of the whole survivability in the nether without a lit portal feature. However, maybe this is just because i've been around a while, but it seems a little bit... on the "easy" side. A ghast is easy to kill even without any items, a wither skeleton can be lured into a pit or something quite simply (the tricky bit is finding them) and blazes can be handled by building around a spawner until they have but one place to spawn, (then taking advantage of that). So, I wouldn't go against this challenge, but I think perhaps some more requirements or disadvantages might be in good order. Of the top of my head...
-You must gather a wither skull
-must obtain a brewing stand
-only play it on Hard (Normal for wimps )
-Get a stone sword and golden sword. (rare drops from wither skellies and pigmen)
-DO NOT USE FLINT & STEEL FOUND IN FORTRESS CHESTS, CHEATERS!
As I said, just my point of view. those could become some sort of harder mode of the challenge or something. I like the idea!
By ghasts being easy to kill, I hope you mean with just a regular bow? Punching a Ghast to death would be...problematic.
But remember that you're trying to kill all 3 kinds of mobs with no armor, and no potions. And going all the way back to put it in the chest is rather hazardous (unless you can do it in one go, but considering a few good hits can get you killed...). Now that I think about it, the chest thing is not very useful, but then again the fortress is quite close to the spawn in that seed.
I wonder if cutting the iron sword would work?
It'd pretty much force the player to kill some zombie pigmen by pillaring up 2 blocks and building a roof over, then punching them to death from above.
That's a good idea. No iron sword it is!
And by ghasts being easy to kill, I meant you can one shot them with their own fireball. Incidentally I find this quite fun
Deflecting the fireball in the correct direction is kinda hard though.
And the golden sword drop chance is pretty low, so maybe just a stone sword. You can't do the reflecting with no sword either.
I don't want it to be mostly grinding, like what collecting Wither skulls is, just a quick little challenge.
Might change it a bit now though.
Ghasts drop gunpowder quite frequently, but usually their drops fall into the lava ocean. Wither skeletons drop coal a third of the time only, but they're pretty easy to kill. Blazes are pretty hard to kill without dying here, since you have no armor and no fire resistance, but their spawners are pretty easily exploited. So it balances out mostly.
Thanks for the feedback.
Anyone want to play it? I might be uploading a few pictures.
I find challenges dumb, but this one's got moxy. Not doin' it but very cool concept man.
I even learned something today. I don't go to the Nether unless I'm getting Ghast tears or Netherwart, so I didn't think about how the fire charges can re-light a portal. And it's also very cool all the necessary materials are obtainable in the Nether.
Fire charges are just like a one-use flint & steel, so it can light anything. Usually pretty retarded to use one up when a flint n steel could have done though.
I thought this up when somebody mentioned that you could get a flint and steel in the nether with absolutely no supplies in a post somewhere. Not true, but it got me thinking.
Thanks, and good luck with that.
One thing I considered was doing it without a sword, which would be hardcore unless you went and farmed Zombie Pigmen for gold swords.
Hmm. I think I'll add a few optional challenges in to make it harder.
I forgot about this for a while, but making a nether base has reminded me of it.
I think I'l leave my nether base and run a few hundred blocks away to start it.
Well, you have to find a Nether Fortress because Wither Skeletons and Blazes spawn only there
I listed a seed with a fortress pretty close to the spawn, so yeah. Just run around the fortress while finding the blazes and a few should have spawned.
Wither Skeletons are pretty easy to kill, they're big, slow and dumb. Can't get past a 2 block high space, easily tricked into falling into a pit (with signs over it), only a regular sword.
They're like more powerful but bulky zombies...and they sometimes drop a stone sword too. (as well as the coal. And the occasional wither skeleton skull :P)

A good seed with a close Nether Fortress is 6890863638126214101. (from this thread)

PROUD USER OF THE STEVE SKIN
I currently don't have time to do it... Maybe sometime next week.
I think I'l leave my nether base and run a few hundred blocks away to start it.
Any tips on finding A wither skeleton?
