This suggestion adds a way to enhance tiers with advantages and disadvantages. To enhance a tool, weapon, or armor piece, you must surround it with four of the enhancement item in the crafting grid in the shape of the compass recipe. These items include gold, diamonds, glowstone, emeralds, lapis, obsidian, and redstone.
Gold
Gold's disadvantages and advantages allow it to be relatively useful. It lowers the durability of tools by 1/4, so they still have 3/4 of their durability left. Another disadvantage is that it lowers what a tier can mine, so for example, a gold enhanced diamond pickaxe cannot mine obsidian, a iron pickaxe cannot mine diamond, and so forth.
But, it also improves mining speed, so a stone pickaxe can mine as fast as a iron one. Armor also gives a minor speed boost.
Swords have a slightly better range, on account of 1/4 less damage.
But the most drastic advantage is in bows. Their damage is cut in half, but a bow can shoot two arrows at once, but it still takes two arrows out of the inventory.
Diamond
Diamond is much more straightforward than gold. It improves durability by a fourth of the actual durability and allows the tool to mine slightly faster, not as fast as gold.
Armor has a performance boost and has a chance to cause fired arrows to bounce off.
Swords are more resistant on blocking and negate a heart to two hearts of damage upon blocking. It also gives a range boost.
Bows fire arrows 1.5 times as fast and 1.5 times more range, as well as a half heart more damage.
Glowstone
Glowstone does nothing to durability and damage. When a tool breaks a block, while the block is being mined it will give off level 12 light.
There are no glowstone armor or swords.
A glowstone bow will fire an arrow that places a torch. It still does damage. It is impossible to give the bow an infinity enchantment.
Emerald
Purely for decoration, this makes your tools, weapons, and armor glow green in the dark like a spider's eyes.
Lapis and Redstone
For decoration, but these don't glow in the dark.
Obsidian
Obsidian is only available on bows. It allows them to shoot three arrows, each doing normal arrow damage.
Tinkered
These are only available through trading at high prices. This is basically ice.
There are no tinkered tools.
Once full armor is achieved, if the player touches water it will turn to ice 70% of the time. This also turns lava into cobblestone. Each block walked takes durability.
The sword and the bow give slowness.
Notes
You can not enhance ones own tier, so it is impossible to get a diamond enhanced diamond pickaxe.
These ideas are great in my opinion but I'm not very sure about the shooting three arrows at once, it'll be overpowered because it takes three arrows to kill a hostile mob.
97% support
It would be spread out, so it would hit three different mobs at once.
