If you download zombe's mod pack you can make custom recipes if you do it right. I found it to be a bit tricky though.

why not make a program that gives certain blocks certain properties?

(___) <--- blank space
(^,v) <--- drop down menu/ navigation button
([]) <--- navigation bar
(I) <--- scroll bar

Quote

MENU:

[/properties] [/map] [/C]

block: ____ {V}

^ -cobble stone-   (onto objects like watches and ingots)
                   [ ]-iron block-
                    I -gold block
                    v - diamond block-

property: ___ {V}

^ -start-          (again the list goes on)
                   [ ]-restart-
                    I -port-
                    V -initiate-

cause: ___ {V}

^ -touch-
                   [ ]-hit-
                    I -break-
                    V -step-

effect: ___ {V}

^ -explode-
                   [ ]-ignite player-
                    I -activate *block/object* -
                    V -activate timer-

something like that, and then give it separate tabs like an editors map that shows placed blocks, layer upon layer, and a tab that shows cause and effect chains so people can link one block to another and have the effect they want

rids most of the use of red stone except for puzzles and traps, but mine craft is still indev. so it won't hurt to centralize an object more
