This mod replaces the normal drops of cows chickens and pigs with an item version of them. You must then hang the dead cow/chicken/pig on a meat hook and use a filet knife to skin them then use a cleaver to obtain the meat/leather/feathers that they would normally drop. Make sure you build a freezer with ice blocks if you plan on storing your meat, if you don't it will rot very quickly after being placed, alternatively you can smoke them with lava which will also preserve them. Ice blocks must be directly touching the animal or lava can be up to 5 blocks below it to prevent rot. Meat will eventually rot if you carry it around with you, so place it in an ice chest to preserve it. You can now also cook your animals on a spit over a fire! see the screen shot for how to set up a spit. To cook your animal left click the prop and the animal will start to rotate. If you don't have it rotating it will burn, you can also skin your animal on a hook first then take it off and put it on a spit to cook it faster than animals that still have skin. You can also kill zombies and hang them on meat hooks.

version 0.5.2- added config options for chance of meat rotting and chance of zombies dropping themselves.
version 0.5.1-animals now drop bones, bug fix.
version 0.5.0- zombies drop themselves along with their normal drops and you can hang them on meat hooks.
version 0.4.3- added config option to enable using cobblestone for the cleaver recipe.
version 0.4.2- if your meat is not turning over a fire it will burn, you can take skinned animals off of hooks and put them on a spit to cook them faster than animals that still have skin. bug fixes. note: you may receive an id mismatch error if you had a previous version installed, try deleting your config file if you had not previously edited it and that should fix it.
version 0.4.1- to cook meat on a spit you have to left click the prop connected to it in order to spin the meat.
version 0.4.0- added spits, the props need to have two blocks between them then place a spit between them to set it up. After that just use your dead animal on it and light a fire beneath it to cook your food. After it is cooked use the cleaver on it to get the cooked meat.
version 0.3.0 - added filet, used to skin animals before you use the cleaver to cut them into meat, changed texture for rotten animals.
version 0.2.1- added smelting recipe for meat.
version 0.2.0 - Meat may now be hung above lava to prevent rot, lava must be no more than 5 block below, rot happens more slowly, dead animals, raw meat and cooked meat may now all rot, added ice chest which will prevent rot of items put inside it. Max item stack size reduced for animals.
version 0.1.1 - configuration file and block/item default ids now work correctly.
version 0.1.0 - meat will now rot if there are no directly adjacent ice blocks, hooks may now be collected by hand.
This was my first mod and it also was initially a request. Available here in case anyone wants it. Adds a wand which increments the metadata of a block when right clicked. Craft with a purple die on top of a stick. Same requirements as the above mod.[Download]
you could add to it that the meat hanging will rot away after x # days, unless there are ice blocks nearby.meaning you would need to build a meat freezer so your food supplies dont go bad.
Oh man. I had high hopes.
You need to add configuration to EVERYTHING.
Otherwise, Killing pigs cows and chickens make them drop Mythril Tools.
And I aint changing their IDs.
I agree there should be ways to preserve the meat that don't require ice blocks. I'm thinking that it might be a bit hard to get food early on when you don't have very much iron. Maybe add a way to quickly butcher the meat on the go, but doing so will give you much less meat?
Hiya, this looks awesome. Really realistic! And the visuals are ofcourse awesome, it's just amazing looking having something like that in your home.
How much are there per stack? Because I'd say only 1 Cow/Pig and up to 4 Chickens per stack, for added realism.
Other ways to prevent rot:
~ Hang it above a fire/lava. ''Smoking'' meat is a very old way to preserve it.
~ Perhaps add Halite ore (which drops Salt), embedded in the Sand on beaches and in Oceans, that you can rub into the meat, to, again, preserve it.
Getting ice blocks is quite hard, so that would counteract it a bit.
Another idea:
Freezing Chest. Drop the raw Meat you got from your freshly butchered animals into here, so it doesn't decay (given item meat rot is also planned)!
While I like these ideas, decay happens extremely fast on the hook, almost too fast even for hardcore. I would include some more features to it and make the decay a little longer and don't limit it to just the meat on the hook, but to the held items(see unlit torch mod for idea) as well (unless put in a freezing chest of course). To prepare a carcass for meat, one must skin the beast, take out the internal organs, clean it, they cut the meat.(i'm not butcher so I'm sure that a RL butcher could add more). Add a filet knife to skin the animal on the hook (hint: leather, feather drops). Another right click with the knife opens the animal. Use an empty hand to remove innards. Make multiple wool in a crafting table to create cloth(dyable, yay!). Use cloth on animal to clean it, cloth turns into dirty cloth (can be cleaned by right clicking water source block).
After the animal is cleaned it must be cut up, right click cleaned animal with empty hand to take it off the hook... cutting board microblock and filet knife = meat.
To make it applicable to all, not just hardcore, config to turn iron required items into all types with different durability. Meat hooks have a limited shelf life as well. To make it more difficult, require that all foods are perishable unless put on ice (vegetation related foods could just have a longer spoil time because when you freeze vegetables (breads and starches aside) they become inedible(could cause nausea) upon thaw. Speaking of spoiling, meat should take about 1/2 to 1 full day to spoil through the whole process, if cooked (could add salt feature to add time to spoiling) could extend the spoiling a bit. Putting foods into a freezer could also cause them to get "freezer burnt" after a time causing less hunger to be given upon ingestion.
version 0.3.0 released, now you can use a filet knife to skin the animals to obtain leather/feathers before using the cleaver to obtain meat. Also changed texture for rotten animals.
This mod is so simple in concept that it's awesome! Very cool. I hope you continue to work on it, improve it and add more Ideas. It could be one of the must have mods in the game.
What about adding some hanging meat to the butcher shops that spawn in villages? or maybe adding villagers to the list of meat...
This mod looks great by the way, I'm downloading it now
