I setup a minecraft server running under Ubuntu 10.10 this weekend. Grandson & I played together on LAN, him on server using 127.0.0.1, me on another Ubuntu client. Ran fine.
Opened port forwarding on router and had a friend try it out from his Ubuntu client. All good.
Today my grandson is trying from his home Windows 7 PC. Connection timed out.
From a Windows PC, I did a CrossLoop connection to his Windows 7 client. From the list of Best Minecraft Private servers, I was able to connect to some, but not all.
I don't know where to start. I don't see how client OS makes any difference. If one person can connect, shouldn't all?
No, server log shows nothing. The log does show the one remote Ubuntu client connection.
Server IP: 71.225.120.218:25565
There's a whitelist, "westmn" added. Can anyone else with a Windows client even get to the whitelist error message? My grandson's client won't even connect, let alone get to the whitelist.

Ubuntu 10.10 server
Local Ubuntu client connects fine
Remote Ubuntu client connects fine through forwarded port
Remote Windows 7 client cannot connect
Same Windows 7 client connects to some other private servers, but not all
Where do I start in troubleshooting a client that can't connect to SOME servers, including mine?
Does your server log show his login attempt?
Can you PM me your server IP so I can test it with my win7 box?
My public free build survival server: http://westcraft.ddns.net

Thanks for the help.
