Right now, making a boat seems a bit too easy considering what it can do. On top of that, the boat's current capabilities are inconsistent with the minecarts, which have ridable, powered, and storage varieties. I think that there should be three boat types.

The first simply goes with water currents and is uncontrollable. It would appear just as boats do now.

The next, crafted by placing two sticks on the sides of a boat in the crafting grid, can be controlled by steadily pressing forwards or backwards (W or S on the keyboard) again and again. Being too wild with your pressing will result in the boat going somewhat out of control until you steady your button pressing.

The last variety of boat would be powered, crafted the same way as a powered minecart. It would consume fuel rather quickly, though, to make up for it's speed.

I like this idea. We do need storage boats too though!
I'd love to motor around in my coal powered boat with my hands full of 64 coal just feeding more and more into it to go faster and faster.

This is a bit confusing, and possibly unnessecary.

But it's still a good idea.

The only one I like is the storage boat.

How is this confusing? It's simple.

Speedboats = technology
Technology =/= Minecraft

I'm assuming it would be like coal-powered mine carts, which we already have.

I like this idea, boats seem way too simple right now.

I personally would like sailboats, but wind would have to be added first. >_>

I'd like to see storage boats and powered boats as well, perhaps break it down into "Tugboats" and "Barges".

For SMP this would be an excellent and cheap way of getting material from point A to point B via constructed canals, a FAR more cost effective (And faster, most likely) alternative to carts.

The only problem?

Tugs can't go "upstream", or handle drops very well:  whichever level they start out on would likely be where they stay, and would need an actual Harbor (+2 or deeper water) to avoid running aground.

Still, I like the idea of tech on this scale, just enough without getting TOO fancy.
