#1 Maverick is the name of Tom Cruse's character in Top Gun, his RIO (Co Piolet) was named Goose (US military uses nicknames), It was quoted in the movie "I fly, Goose just sits in the back and pedals."
Sadly it's not a good joke if I have to explain it. I withdraw my comment
And now I just dated myself.
#2 What is this apple program Maverick? If it has anything to do with open GL, Mojang recently messed with open GL. So that might be your problem.
In my case my frame rates drop like that when I turn ON open GL, however I'm using a PC.
I'm on Mavericks and Minecraft 1.7.2. My frame rate plummeted, and was barely playable. But it got worse from there. Every time I launched, the world get less and less stable, including many areas where I could see all the way underground
My world now doesn't render beyond a ~50x50 square, including a giant hole. It doesn't save my location anymore, leaving me dropping into the same spot of water every time I launch.
This is in a totally unmodified, creative mode environment.
EDIT:I purged my java cache in system preferences. That allowed the totally render area to go up to about 150x150 and my new position is saving. Several holes now exist. The game is basically unplayable at this stage. The game also doesn't quit properly. Minecraft Launcher shows open in the dock, requiring me to manually close it or force it.
After Mavericks, Minecraft 1.6.4 was working well enough. But 1.7.2 pretty much screwed the pooch.
This shouldn't have to be done, though. I'm now getting 1/4 of the FPS I had prior to installing Mavericks.
The drop on frame rate, while unpleasant, isn't the worst of my problems. A world that doesn't render is far worse. I might have been unclear, but the 150x150 rendering isn't 150x150 based on my location, it's 150x150 period. As in I can move to this edge and there's nothing beyond.

I knew the answer, you just disqualified me in the OP by specifying "under 30".
First movie I ever walked out on and demanded a refund, btw.
I made a new partition and installed mavericks on it as well to see if something was wrong with my install but got nothing better there.
Bonus 50 diamonds for anyone who gets that joke and is under the age of 30.
Yeah haha I don't get those 50 diamonds.
To be honest everything else is running great, it's just this is being kind of a jerk.
Might be something that'll be fixed soon.
I can think of two things that might be causing this, not sure how to fix it though:
The new energy/battery saving thing
or the new OpenGL stuff
not sure how it could be fixed, though
Frankie Laine?
I went to the Apple Store today. They said it might be compatibility issue, also, try re-install java.
Alright, thanks.
Did reinstalling fix it for you?

1. Smooth Lighting - turn down to minimum.
2. You don't really need clouds do you?
3. Particles - down the minimum.
Check FPS now.
P.S i'm running Lion and my FPS is 10-30 - which is fine.
This shouldn't have to be done, though.

I used to have more than 100 fps and all the sudden it dropped to 30-40.
Sad.
