This has been an argument I've seen everywhere whenever someone suggests an update towards realism. The main flaw with it is that realism isn't black and white. Minecraft can have unrealistic elements while at the same time have realistic elements, and still be a fun game to play.
Of course it can have both realistic and unrealistic things. Those people are silly. Frankly I consider that spam.

Because fun beats realism in minecraft and most realistic suggestions destroy most of the fun in minecraft. And most realistic stuff doesn't fit anyway.

I recommend suggesting this to the For the Critics thread in the Suggestions section. It could be a great addition. (Actually, I believe an unadded proposal and discussion for this suggestion are on pages 16 & 17)
Anyways, back on topic. Long story short, Minecraft is a game. Of course it will have realisitic and unrealistic elements. It would almost be impossible to find a game that is 100% realistic.
However, if this suggestion could enhance the gameplay of Minecraft in a reasonable and sensible way, then I'm all for it. The realism of a gameplay element is usually independent of the gameplay experience.

The same thing could be said about almost anything, realistic or not. Most realistic suggestions destroy most fun in minecraft, but so do most unrealistic suggestions. The entertainment value of an element is not dependent on it's realism.

I agree, though I'd go even further, specifically in regards to the other side of the situation, where people argue that an unrealistic suggestion is stupid because it isn't realistic. For example, I recently saw this when someone suggested that Podzol should spread like grass, when in reality it wouldn't spread because it is a soil. The realism here isn't at all important, and is a ridiculous argument against the idea when adding realism isn't the point of the suggestion in the first place. Too realistic/not realistic enough are far too simple of an argument against almost any suggestion.

Perhaps I misread- I don't quite see how the podzol analogy fit with what you were trying to say. You said realism isn't enough to discredit a suggestion on it's own, however the only reason the spreading podzol suggestion was shot down was because it wasn't realistic.
Definitely agreed. I don't want to advertise/insult much, but this suggestion thread on the Galacticraft forums(Galacticraft is obviously a Minecraft mod that adds space travel) clearly doesn't sees the idea that there can be both realistic and irrealistic things on Minecraft.
For example, in Galacticraft, there could be both planets with alien remakes of mobs who want to kill you like their Overworld brethen, and Gas Giants that you can't land in. Basically, this fact would make the game fun and challenging, but at the same time with a hint of realism instead of "hurr durr build portal to jupiter n mine its ores n have ceres have an enderdragon boss cuz it dosnt needs realism".
Again, I don't mean to offend the guy who made that thread, but, the same way he needed to vent offf his rage against the people who don't support landable Jupiter in Galacticraft, I needed to vent off about this Realism discussion. And this fact doesn't applies only to mods, it also applies to vanilla Minecraft. There can be both floating blocks and a stamina meter. (Not suggesting that a stamina meter would be a good suggestion, it was the only thing that popped in my mind)
What are your thoughts on this?
