Yep, a redstone inverter. Inverts the signal compactly, works like a repeater.

sounds good for making compact devices, but would there be a downside so that people would still use torches in circuits?

well if it works like a repeater then why not just use a repeater.

Did you read anything? Not even the title?

you described it as "works like a repeater"

I understand what you meant, but it appears he didn't.

and I feel like the recipe should be:
[]  []  []
[]  :iapprove:  []
:Notch:   :Notch:  [] ----------the torch can be placed on either side of the stone

where  :Notch:  is redstone dust
and   :Notch: is a redstone torch.

you know, so the blueprint looks like the compact version of it....
Remember.

He obviously read more than you did while you were writing it; you said repeater at the end of the OP...

Nonetheless, you have to be careful that it is worth using. The repeater blocks, I worked out, cost more than actually making a repeater, making the old version more efficient. However, they have their uses, because they don't interfere with wires to the sides, and can be used to make compact circuits.

You haven't suggested a way in which these would be better than actually using a repeater. Have some coal:  ;) But, as we all know, coal can become diamonds... ;-)

@Msj2705

My idea was that it had redstone flowing into it, so it flowed into the block and deactivated the torch. Also, with the texture, it's a scaled down block with a scaled down redstone torch on it, and it moves along the redstone wite when you click it (like a repeater)

I am a noob when it comes to redstone, but repeater sounds to me like a redstone thing which constantly cycles it's on/off state. this is already doable with at least three of the redstone blocks notch recently added who's name I forgot. an inverter sounds kind of useless, from my limited knowledge.
