So i was just wondering how you all get to bedrock level for your mines. I'm bored of the way i usually do it which  is making a 3x3 hole with and extra one block cleared on the side for a ladder/water ladder:

(edit) Since i guess it was unclear, I'm talking about your mine shafts.

Are you expressing that the method I am using is inefficient?
Should I perhaps mine upwards instead?

Never saw somebody that mined upwards to get to Bedrock. Nicely done, sir.

I do it all the time...in the Nether.

To get to down to bedrock I use the same method as the OP.

Normally I build a 2x2 or 2x3 staircase down to the bottom.

I think he means the method you guys use to travel up and down your mineshafts.

My method is actually rather interesting. I choose to go up by jumping and stacking a massive column of gravel under me, and go down by digging it up. It may be a bit slower, but it allows me to do a small amount of flint grinding every time I enter my mine.

Personally, I want to get to the bottom as fast as possible, and then branch mine on levels 12 and 16.  So I usually do a 1x2 hole. The smallest I can safely dig down with, and not be directly digging straight down.  Using ladders on one wall, and torches on the other. I will usually eventually put much glass on the wall opposite the ladders, so I can go down safely without fear of falling.  With my exits from the ladder being off to the left or right.

If I'm more in the mood for something bigger or more grand, I'll do a large spiral staircase or something. But I got annoyed with traveling top to bottom (or vice versa) in them.
