First off, before people complain about this being redundant I used the search function and came upon no Shark threads that weren't extremely vague. The water is a very desolate place. The only mob that spawns is squids, which are pretty rare and useless. So I am now suggesting another mobs -- sharks.
There are 3 types of sharks -- Blacktip, Great White, and Bonnethead. Blacktip sharks are 1.5 times more common that squids, and are a neutral mobs, unless one of two things happen. One you attack them (similar to wolves and Zombie Pigmen), or two, they have a moment in which they think you are another fish and attack you -- there is a 10% chance of this happening for every BT Shark that sees you. However, they only attack once once they realize you are human -- this is a behavior exhibited by sharks in the wild too.
Great Whites are far more agressive. They have a 20% chance of attacking you once, thinking you are another fish (like what the Blacktip does) but have a 60% chance of spawning hostile and attacking you endlessly. They are 3x LESS common then a Blacktip, so you do not have to worry about them as much though.
Bonnetheads, a type of Hammerhead sharks, are the sweetheart of the shark world. They are a completely passive mobs, not attacking you even when you attack them. They also will not bite or attack you. They have the same chance as spawning as great whites.
Blacktip Sharks deal 3 hearts of damage and has 6 hearts of damage, Bonnethead deals none and has 7 hearts, and Great White deals 5 and has 10. So Great Whites can kill you in 3 hits (unarmored), making the water a needfully more dangerous place. Their drops are also useful.
Drops:
Shark teeth have a 15% chance of dropping from any blacktip, bonnethead, or great white shark. Unenchanted they don't do anything besides being used to create extra good bonemeal -- one shark tooth plus one bone = 2 double bonemeal -- this as the name suggests is twice as effective at making plants grow. But enchanted, they can get unlocking, repellant, or creature protection. You can use them by crafting a shark tooth necklace. Here is a table of what different levels can get and the different enchantments:
Zombie protection -- zombies deal 1/2 a heart less damage per hit and zombies are 10% less likely to spawn enforcements.
Enderman protection -- enderman deal 1 heart less damage per hit and have a 50% chance of either dropping whatever block they are holding then teleporting away or not picking up a block they would have picked up if you are within a 32 block radius.
Withering protection -- the wither effect never puts you down to less than one heart of health and has a 1 second shorter time. Mobs with wither effect also deal 1/2 heart less damage. Works on both wither skeletons and the wither.
Creeper protection -- creepers' explosions deal 2 less hearts of damage and have a 3 block shorter agro radius.
Witch protection -- witches' potions wear of 1-2 seconds sooner and have a 10% chance of not attacking.
Repellant -- mobs walk 25% slower when within 4 blocks of you.
Unlocking -- allows people to fight the megladon boss -- more on that here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/2097576-megladon-water-boss-sister-thread-to-sharks/
Here are the levels and chances of getting them:
Level 1-8: 100% chance of zombie protection
Level 9-10: 90% chance of zombie protection, 10% chance of enderman protection
Level 11-12: 75% chance of zombie protection, 20% chance of enderman protection, 5% chance of withering protection
Level 13: 70% chance of zombie protection, 25% chance of enderman protection, 5% chance of withering protection
Level 14: 65% chance of zombie protection, 25% chance of enderman protection, 10% chance of withering protection
Level 15-16: 60% chance of enderman protection, 30% chance of withering protection, 10% chance of creeper protection
Level 17: 55% chance of enderman protection, 35% chance of withering protection, 10% chance of creeper protection
Level 18: 50% chance of enderman protection, 40% chance of withering protection, 10% chance of creeper protection
Level 19: 40% chance of enderman protection, 40% chance of withering protection, 20% chance of creeper protection
Level 20-21: 60% chance of withering protection, 30% chance of creeper protection, 10% chance of witch protection
Level 22: 55% chance of withering protection, 35% chance of creeper protection, 10% chance of witch protection
Level 23: 50% chance of withering protection, 40% chance of creeper protection, 10% chance of witch protection
Level 24: 40% chance of withering protection, 40% chance of creeper protection, 20% chance of witch protection
Level 25: 75% chance of creeper protection, 25% chance of witch protection
Level 26: 60% chance of creeper protection, 40% chance of witch protection
Level 27: 50% chance of creeper protection, 50% chance of witch protection
Level 28: 65% chance of witch protection, 35% chance of creeper protection
Level 29: 60% chance of witch protection, 25% chance of creeper protection, 15% chance of repellant
Level 30: 40% chance of repellant, 30% chance of witch protection, 30% chance of unlocking
A few other things:
In a boat, you are completely safe from Blacktips and mostly safe from Great Whites. However Great Whites have a 5% chance of attacking your boat -- this will break it into pieces, forcing you to swim away from the shark. However this can be prevented by using Obsidian Boats -- in addition Obsidian Boats wont float away when you leave them on the shore and wont break when you crash it into the shore. They have the identical crafting recipe to standard boats, except with obsidian.
When you have a third of your hearts left or less, great whites will attack you 90% of the time and blacktips will bite you 50% of the time. This is because they smell blood. You can domesticate Bonnethead sharks -- swimming up to them will cause them to swim away, but if you hold a piece of rotten flesh or fish out, they will swim towards you -- this is similar to how cats are tamed, except with rotten flesh as an option and the bonnetheads are a bit less shy. The first time you attempt to tame them, you have a 10% chance of getting the job done with flesh and 20% with fish -- every time you attempt to tame them the chance go up 10%. So they are hard to tame but worth it. A tamed Bonnethead will stay in water (because well, they have to) but will keep 5 blocks near the side of the ocean. It is very possible and recommended to build an enclosure for your bonnethead -- one way to do this is to build a small river going through the land, leading to to a pool -- one the shark is in the pool, you can close off the river.

I don't know, people always want sharks to be hostile, but the fact is that they only kill 6 people a year (you'd rather get killed by coconuts). If you can add a peaceful shark then I would support a lot more. And wouldn't Mojang want to implement swimming fish first? 1/2 support.
Really well thought out, I feel like the ocean is kind of... Boring right now and this would add the excitement that I believe that this would add. However, I think that in addition to the great white and the bt, there should also be a Megalodon that will, well it would work like it is believed to before it became extinct. As in it would be a giant shark, (it would be cool if it played jaws music when it came near although it would be difficult to add that because of copyright), and when it attacked, it would open its jaws and you would see the giant mouth (although they may run into extreme fps issues) and it would destroy even the iron boat. Also, Advice on the iron boat, it should be crafted with obsidian on the sides so so that it makes sence that it is basically unbreakable and a diamond in the middle mostly so it wouldn't be too OP. What do you think?

No Megalodon. We are just fine with great whites in minecraft.

Exactly which is why I added the peaceful unless provoked sharks, plus the great whites. The great whites arent very common and if you were smart it would be very hard to be killed by them. I see your point though.

Thanks! Megalodon would be amazing but incredibly OP though. Hahaha it would still be funny. And yeah I guess Obsidian makes more sense and is less OP. Edited the original post.
We should add fish first. Mojang is currently working on a way to implement them without killing your framerate.
Fish are good but arent very lively. This said, I would eventually love to see them add tuna/salmon/trout/whatever, but I think first Sharks should be added, to make water more interesting.
Hahaha good point as well. I meant to add into the post how minecraft isnt very realistic anyways (because after all skeletons dont exist and shoot arrows at you) but you beat me to it.

Thank you about that. Maybe you could also suggest a dogfish, which doesn't attack. I also forgot to mention how the obsidian boat sounds amazing.
And yet lightning kills more people then sharks. Can you die from lightning? Yes, and also in minecraft. Thanks for the useless tip.

Okay that's not a bad idea. Only thing is that dogfish arent all that common or very stereotypical fish. But I may add some form of peaceful fish one I get around to it. And thank you glad you like it

With the megolodon it would be less op because it wouldn't spawn that often and it would be like a boss mod. also the water would have to be really deep, and maybe you find it near abandoned shipwrecks? just a thought.

Maybe one of those peaceful hammerhead sharks, like the bonnet head hammer head shark. Those are cute, and would be a good peaceful mob.
If you want to see what shark I am talking about so it would be even more awesome see this link from the New England Aquarium, which explains about the tiny shark: http://www.neaq.org/...shark/index.php
Blacktip I am guessing two blocks, and probably 2 and a half blocks for the white pointer.
I've seen and petted a Bonnethead in person actually
Also, since 1 block=1 cubic meter, a Blacktip would be about 1 and a half blocks long, and a great white would be about 6-7 blocks long.
