Please note that this is very boring and contains little detail, if you have any questions about the stuff, read some long, even more boring stuff below if you like.
Basically dolphins would be a new ocean mob. There are four types: Bottlenose, Dusky, Commerson's, and Orca.
"WHAT?!? Killer Whales aren't dolphins!"
I don't care.
To tame dolphins, simply give them some fish, after that you can ride them, no saddle needed. Like horses, the dolphin offspring would be like the parents with the same sort of speeds, jumping, and health.
So, that's about it, again, if you have any questions you want answered badly enough, try searching in the long sea of words below and if you can't find anything there, you can ask me! c:
Support and constructive criticism appreciated!
Hey guys! I've been wanting dolphins in Minecraft for awhile now. I'm assuming I'm not the only one who is getting a bit tired of squids, so I'm here to suggest dolphins! I know this has been suggested many times before, but this is a bit different than most dolphin threads from what I understand so please don't lock/delete this.
First off, there would be four kinds of dolphins. A Bottlenose dolphin, a Dusky dolphin, a Commerson's dolphin, and an Orca... I'm guessing you're thinking "what the heck?!? A killer whale isn't a dolpin!" Well, it sorta is and it sorta isn't. But I'm gonna stick it in with dophins anyway, Mojang stuck donkeys and mules with horses, so I'll stick this guy in, too, dolphin or not. Here are some pictures of the four kinds of dolphins/whales:
(these are just pics I got off the internet of dolphins, so nothing speacal, just so you know what they look like).
Bottlenose
Duskey
Commerson's
Orca
Here is a brief summary of Minecraft dolphins.

Dolphins would be new mobs that spawn in ocean biomes. Dolphins have a variable amont of hearts, jump hight, and speed. Different types of dolphins have different specialties. All untamed dolphins swim in pods (groups.) You could ride them simaler to riding boats. If killed, they would drop nothing but a lousey amount of exp. Dolphins would be 1x1 meters plus one more meter when steve mounts them with the exeption of Orcas. Orcas would be 2x2 meters unmounted, but when mounted they would be 2x4.
________________________
BREEDING:
You can breed dolphins with another of its type with raw fish (A whalphin whould be cool though...). No, not just one fish, up to 20. The chance of the mob going in to love mode increases by 10% every fish. Love mode for dolphins would last three times longer than for normal mobs. Here is a list of the chance of a dolphing going into love mode per fish:
________________________
| One fish | 10% |
| Two Fish | 20% |(red fish blue fish)
|Three fish| 30% |
| Four Fish| 40% |
________________________
I'm assuming you get the picture.... It can go all the way to 90% if you're unlucky (and the next fish would put it into love mode).
Like horses, the offspring would have the same sort of traits the parents had.
________________________
TAMING:
Dolphins would be a friendly mob so it would only take as many fish as an ocelot or wolf would (only with bones for a wolf, obvously). Once tamed, hearts come up from him just like all the other mobs. Then you could ride it and steer it without a saddle. So... that's about it.
Edit: if you ride an untamed dolphin it would take you to "auto-pilot" mode, thank you Lilly. (See controlls)
________________________
STEERING BASICS & CONTROLLS:
You cannot ride an untamed dolphin; but once tamed you can without a saddle. To get on top of it you must right-click it when its tamed. To swim up when its in down you must hold the spacebar untill you reach the surface, when reached, your exp bar (now jumping meater) will go up if you're still holding space. Some dolphins can jump four blocks out of the water if you let go of space at the right moment. Another feture would be "Auto-pilot mode". I could probably think up some cool name for it but I'm too lazy right now. Well, this would be where the dolphins swim around and jump and stuff without you controlling them so you could ride them just for fun. A dolphin would be able to sense if you're running out of air when you're on auto-pilot mode, when it does, it jumps from the water. You could stay under longer with the aqua-affinty enchantment. Here are some basic default controls:
W = forward
A = turn left
D = turn right
S = down
Space = up and when at surface, jump
LShift: dismount
Auto-pilot mode = RShift (Right Shift) (RShift to stop auto-pilet, too)
It would be possibe to drown if you don't swim upward on something other than auto-pilet mode. It would also be possibe to drown if you're in a consealed area with water filled in every nook and cranny on auto-pilot mode, but dolphins would know how to look for air simalerly like how skeletons know how to find their prey.

Dusky dolphin information:
These dolphins would be 2nd most common. They specialize in jump hight but are somewhat slower than the others.
Orca Whale information:
Orca whales would be the third rarest whale/dolphin. They specialize in health and are somewhat worse at jumping out of the water. Wild Orca's could be found roaming the open seas (ocean) in small pods. If you attacked a wild one, it would attack back, attempting to kill. If it kills you, it imidatly turns passive again. Once tamed, it wouldn't hurt you. That's about it. You could not tame a hostile Orca.
Commerson's dolphin:
Commerson's dolphins would be the most rare. They wouldn't spawn in just any part of the ocean, they would spawn near a structure generated in the ocean. Perhaps somethig like sunken ship or something like this thing (I made it, that's why its ugly).
And if not something like that, then they would just spawn very rarely, rarer than orcas. Commerson's dolphins would specialize in speed but lower on heath. These would be the smallest dolphins. (Still 1x1)
Bottlenose dolphin:
These mobs would be the easist to find. They would be more of an all-around type, so if you like jump hight, health, and speed the same, you would want these guys. If you don't, stick with the other ones because bottlenose dolphins would be slighly worse at everything.
I think that's about it guys, hope you like it. If you have any questions or comments I would like to hear them. If you liked it a lot, a +1 would be nice
Yes, I've been longing for some more ocean mobs. Support, though I hope the dolphins are only a little faster than boats, not too fast, because boating would be come obsolete.
Support, though I hope the dolphins are only a little faster than boats, not too fast, because boating would be come obsolete.
Boats would still be very useful, they're very easy to obtain and inexpencive. Dolphins on the other hand would be somewhat hard to find, you'd need to tame/breed them, they cannot really move on land, and only some of them (most) go faster than boats.
This is a great idea, but what's each of the dolphin's health? I like the breeding system, but do you have to tame the dolphins before you breed them? Maybe you would be on auto-pilot mode on default unless you put a saddle on them, sort of like horses.
I support, but there are just a couple details missing.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I'm on a bit of a hiatus from playing Minecraft, so I'm not so active in this forum, either. I still check it though, and participate in a few discussions.
I guess if we had sharks added too, sharks would attack dolphins (I'm pretty sure they don't in real life, so not sure if this would work) presenting a danger to dolphin-riding?
Quite the opposite, while it's not impossible for a Shark to attack a Dolphin, it's usually the other way around. Sharks tend to hunt solo (although not always) and Dolphins almost always stay in large schools. Dolphins are faster and more maneuverable than Sharks, and also they tend to surround Sharks on all sides and continue to ram them until they die or swim away.
I support this. We not only need more mobs in the ocean, but this would make it quicker to get across a large vast of water. They need to go really fast, or somewhat faster than boats since they are fast creatures. The only thing I didn't like was what they dropped when you killed them.
It should go like:
-Wooden sword: Drops nothing and takes about 15 hits to kill
Stone sword: Drops exp at 2% chance and takes about 12 hits to kill
-Gold sword: Drops a little exp and takes about 10 hits to kill
-Iron sword: Drops some exp and takes about 8 hits to kill
-Diamond sword: Drops a lot of exp, and on rare occasions, a gold ingot. Takes about 4 hits to kill
The percentage of them dropping a gold ingot would be about 5%. That basically means out of every 20 you kill, one of those is probably going to drop a gold ingot. Only with a diamond sword. Why do I suggest that they drop a gold ingot? Because it is the ocean, and there can be a lil treasure in it.
I have thought of sharks before, but since they attack you, they would be hostile, therefore wouldn't spawn when difficulty=peaceful is on. I know this thread isn't about sharks, but since other people are talking about that I figured I'd just throw that in.
I would be so happy to have dolphins it would be gr8.

Woah, the topic lives!
Anyway, sorry I didn't include that info. Health... I'm thinking an average wild dolphin would have approx 8 hearts. Yes, you would have to tame them before you breed them, and that auto-pilot mode before taming them would be awesome! I'll add that, but there would still be a tamed auto-pilot feature
I love the idea, but you should have to have a saddle to ride a dolphin. Since fish isnt too difficult to get, it wouldnt be too hard (especially if you live near an ocean!) to find one.
There should also be Iron, Gold, and Diamond dolphin armor, that can be found in those underwater temples in 1.8 and one of those special things that you mentioned that only certain dolphins spawn around, like you can find horse armor in the 2 land temples, you can find dolphin armor in the 2 water temples.
