I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old PC, and have followed the steps. I put Minecraft, jar on my desktop, changed the permission rights to allow executing file as program, and tried to login. It worked, tried to download, but then crashed. Here is my error message.

Old PC still needs to be 3d capable.

System -> Administration -> Additional Drivers.

Failing that can you post output of:

lspci | grep VGA && glxinfo | grep ing

I typed in your script and:
hunter@hunter-Dimension-2400:~$ lspci | grep VGA && glxinfo | grep ing
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82845G/GL[Brookdale-G]/GE Chipset Integrated Graphics Device (rev 01)
The program 'glxinfo' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install mesa-utils

I would suggest using the official Java, rather than OpenJDK. I've helped a few people who have Ubuntu, and I think OpenJDK may be a source of some issues.

To get the official Java, just open the synaptic package manager, and enable all the repositories. Then do a reload of the package list, and type sun-java, and the jre should show up in the list. Before you install the official Java, uninstall OpenJDK.

How do I uninstall the JDK?

Use the synaptic package manager. Should be in the list, just "uncheck" it, and hit apply.

Ok, I think I uninstalled it, but now which Sun-Java do I install? There are multiple different items that show up. Sorry for my ignorance.

There should be something like sun-java-jre. Just look for the one that has jre in it.

I'm still getting the same error. Man, I'm losing confidence in this whole endeavour.

Try this:

Make sure the .jar files are marked as executable. Go to the properties of the file, and add the checkmark for that.

Not directly related to the topic, but i guess, here are some Linux users.

Do you guys have sound?

I'm running Arch Linux 64 bits, and i don't have any sound in minecraft, but all other applications (including java applications) have sound.

Any hints or forum threads i didn't found?
Removing and copying back the program file
is not a solution for configuration problems.

If you run it again, it will now confirm what 3d acceleration you are getting.

Run what? The original script you gave me? Because I ran it twice already and went through that whole installation thing. EDIT: Never mind, I guess I didn't do it right the first time, but here is what came up.

That shows you are not getting hardware accelerated OpenGL, which I believe your card is capable of (Intel says OpenGL 1.3)

I'd suggest you take this to http://ubuntuforums.org/
Or if feeling daring try the x-updates ppa.

Thanks to epikal and chuckaknuckle. Hopefully I can get this problem resolved in future. I will post my solution here, regardless of how long it takes.
