IMPORTANT NOTICE: This guide was written before the introduction of custom block and item models. This thread will not be of any help if you're making a custom model, only if you are making an animation. Sorry
Have your textures been replaced by strange pink and black squares? Can't find a solution? Don't know what to do? Read on! This simple step-by-step diagnostic will help you get your textures right as rain! At the end of each step, click the link that best suits your answer!
Warning: this guide will assume that you have a basic knowledge of texture editing. If you don't know where packs are stored, how to open them, or how to edit them, please consult a tutorial on that subject first.
START HERE
First, make sure that your pack is in a folder, not a zip file. If your pack isn't a folder, you'll need to unzip it.
Now you'll need to find the texture that is broken. Look around inside the pack until you find the broken texture. All the files are intuitively named, so it shouldn't be that difficult to find it.
Make sure that the texture is a perfect square. It has to have the same dimensions on all sides. If it isn't a square, Minecraft will assume that it's supposed to be animated. If there is an mcmeta file with the same name as the png, delete the mcmeta file.
Now you need to find the mcmeta file that accompanies the texture. It should be named .png.mcmeta. For example, if you're trying to fix the torch, the mcmeta file should be named torch.png.mcmeta. If the name is incorrect, rename it. Make sure that your operating system does not append a .txt extension to the end, or you'll break it. If the mcmeta file does not exist, create a new text document and give it the proper name.
Mcmeta files are really just javascript files in disguise. Any text editor will do, even Notepad. I recommend Notepad++, simply because of its other uses, but that's just personal preference.
You'll need to make sure that the code in the file is ship shape. First, make sure that every opening bracket has an accompanying closing bracket. This is easily checked with the syntax highlighting feature of Notepad++. Once that is done, make sure that there are no hanging commas (meaning, no commas with nothing after them). Then, make sure that there are no frames listed that don't exist. If your animation has 16 frames, the numbers listed should be from 0-15, not 1-16. If you use 1-16, then the computer will assume that your animation has 17 frames, and that frame 0 is not used. When it doesn't find the 17th frame, it will give you the pink and black squares.
Now to write the code. Start with the base:
{"animation":{
}
}
If you plan on displaying the animation in the regular order, with the regular delay, then you can leave it here and it will work.
There are some things you can do to modify your animation. For a full tutorial, click here.

I am having an odd problem.
My tnt_side.png is 32 X 352 (11 total frames at 32X)
I made a tnt_side.png.mcmeta for the png
Every single combo, both basic and not basic, stuff results in the pink and black squares.
{"animation":{
}
}
Doesn't fix it, and I've exhausted pretty much all combos and possibilities I can think of. I can link the picture if that helps.
Thanks
Edit: I just tried using an already working block and its mcmeta renaming it and it worked.
I'm thinking it might have something to do with the height of the picture?
EDIT 2: NVM. Solved my own problem. I'm guessing that the animation has to be a certain length then?
Doubling it/tripling it should work then
Im not very familiar with coding, but I tried what you wrote and went to the link and tried that, the block im trying to animate (beacon) is still pink and black. Also, when I try to open the original PNG file it says windows cant open that format.

Well then it sounds like there's an issue with your beacon png file. Check that it's not corrupted.

Be sure to copy the beacon file out of minecraft.jar before you open it.
what was that about unzipping? if you meant for it to work in game, resource packs HAVE to be zipped to work.
ps. if unzipped resource packs work for some of you, please let me know, because they certainly don't work for me.
That is 100% not true.
Resource packs don't have to be zipped, and haven't since 1.3. If you make a folder with the same folder structure as the zip would have, it will work just the same. The folder has to be set up exactly the same as any zipped pack, with the /assets/ folder in the root directory of the pack.

I use a Mac and folders do work (but when using TextureEnder I have to compress them), and whenever I have a download with the file (a folder) that is in a zip file, my Safari Browser just unzips it, and when I open the folder there is a pack.png, pack.mcmeta, and assets folder. When I put the folder in my Resource Pack folder, it shows up and I use it (100% of the texturepacks I have are unzipped)

Yes, Mr. Techy4198 was sadly misinformed. You've been able to use an unpacked folder since about 1.3.
Alright, this is just flat out weird. in 1.8, I see all Item Frames as pink/black cubes even using out-of-the-box default textures. I sincerely doubt Mojang would release without making sure there weren't major graphics errors. There are no problems with the files themselves.
I'm wondering if it might by my GFX card. It's an Nvidia GEForce 610 GT.

If you're just trying to run vanilla minecraft, and you haven't loaded any resource packs or mods, then yes, it's probably your graphics card.
This guide was written before custom models were introduced, so it's possible that the model system is the cause. I'll update the OP to reflect this.
Do you have any wisdom on why blocks are appearing as flat white squares? I'm on a MultiMC launcher (because I am involved in a server) and a LOT of my items are non-placeable and show up as these strange entities...
You are in the wrong section. This section is about resource pack issues, while what you are facing seems to be a mod issue. Try the mod forums for support for that.
I tried everything step-by-step but it didn't work.
>My original problem: I'm using resource pack Conquest with connected textures en alternate blocks. If I turn the alternate block (using the modify app) OFF áll my normal minecart rails become pink and black. Turn it ON and only a few random pieces will become pink and black.
There are 5 different kind of rails in this pack, and I maganed to find out which one it was (see attachment) but I still couldn't fix this problem
Anyone know a solution??
Please make sure you have the latest version of the pack, and if the issue still happens in the latest version, contact the author of the pack, as any fix we can provide would need to be fixed by them anyways
What to do if it's part of a mod I downloaded? All other textures work, except these aluminium stairs that are part of the chisel mod...they seem to share the same name with some that DO have textures though.

Is the texture supposed to be animated? (If it's a pack you downloaded, and not one you created yourself, the answer is probably yes.)
Yes, it's supposed to be animated. No, it's not supposed to be animated.
Make sure that the texture is a perfect square. It has to have the same dimensions on all sides. If it isn't a square, Minecraft will assume that it's supposed to be animated. If there is an mcmeta file with the same name as the png, delete the mcmeta file.

Alright, now that you've got the file open, it's time to check the code.
There's already code in the file. The file is empty.
You'll need to make sure that the code in the file is ship shape. First, make sure that every opening bracket has an accompanying closing bracket. Dat darn lava and dat darn water had me confused for a while, and then I found this
A wild signature appears!
Did they change the signature limit, or is it just me?
I'm going to have some fun with this!
Be sure to copy the beacon file out of minecraft.jar before you open it.
Don't thank me just press the green upward arrow.
The answer to the universe.
