(5/7/12) - A step in the right direction!! Baby Animals Model Swapper for SSP 1.2.5 only
I've managed to get the vanilla babies to look like the ones from my mod. I'm releasing it as a model swapper only for now, we'll see about other functionality later. You can download it here. Installation is old school, you must open minecraft.jar and copy over the files (no modloader or audiomod needed for this version!) This mod overwrites the vanilla animals, so it will probably conflict with other mods that mess with the animals as well.
['Permission' to use my mods in your mod compilations]
I hate 'am not a fan of' the way adf.ly works and could care less about making money on my mods. It's stable now, so put it in your mod pack if you want.
Thanks NWizUnicorn, cybrbeast, MadTortle and others for the following videos!
Baby Animals for SSP 1.1.0 only
This mod adds baby animals to the world that you can bring home to tame, raise and breed. Since the addition of the vanilla breeding system it's pretty redundant, but I try to keep it updated. Installation and Instructions:
Spoiler
Instructions:
Back up your minecraft.jar! It wouldn't hurt to back up your save too.
Add ModLoader following it's instructions.
Add AudioMod following it's instructions.
Drop the resources folder from the BabyAnimals download into the .minecraft folder.
Drop the whole zip into .minecraft\mods. (make the directory if you have to)
Delete the META-INF folder if it exists in minecraft.jar.
A properties file will be generated in .minecraft\mods\BabyAnimals when you run the game for the first time after installing the mod. You can customize item/block ids, whether or not the naturally occurring babies spawn (You can still summon them with SSP Commands if you wish), and some other things.
If you are getting a black screen after login please post the modloader.txt file that can be found directly in the .minecraft folder. If it is some other kind of issue related to this mod then please give details on how to reproduce it.
If you are having trouble with other mods check the modloader.txt file in your .minecraft folder. It will tell you if there are ID conflicts.

Right-click with the lasso to get your tamed baby animal to follow you closely. Best
only used for short periods. Right click again to release. Can be used alone or
in conjunction with seeds.
Wheat (baby livestock only)
---------------------------
Feed a baby a piece of wheat and it will be tamed so you can give it other items. Keep them in a secure area though,
because they can wander off and then you have to go find them! Wheat can also
be fed to hurt babies to heal 2 HP each.
Cactus/Cooked Cactus (baby livestock only)

If you feed a tamed baby a piece of (yucky) cactus green, it will become wild again
and eventually disappear the way other wild animals do.

piece of lightstone dust will fully heal it.

Use bones to tame puppies. The number needed to tame a puppy is random
Pork (puppies only)
-------------------
Use pork to heal tame puppies. It restores 3 HP each piece.
Fish (squicks only)
-------------------
Use fish to heal squicks. It restores 3 HP each fish.

- cows drop leather and/or beef
- sheep drop wool
- pigs drop pork
- wolves don't drop anything

Lasso
-----
Right-click with the lasso to get your animal to follow you closely. Best only
used for short periods. Right click again to release. Can be used alone or in

Cows take 9 full Minecraft days, sheep take 5 days, pigs take 4 days and wolves
take 2 days. A full Minecraft day is 20 minutes. Sleeping does not speed this up.

FAQ
Spoiler
Q: I installed everything right but I can't hear the babies!
A: Make sure the sounds are in .minecraft/resources/mod/sound. If this doesn't fix it, reinstall Audio Mod.
Q: Where are the babies, I can't see them (but I can hear them)?
A: Make sure that there is a mob folder in .minecraft/mods/[baby animals zip folder] and that there are textures in it.
Q: I fed my babies wheat but they still de-spawned!
A: Make sure that their tag shows up when you feed them wheat. If they are tame they won't take any more wheat from you. Also, they must be in a secure pasture/barn/etc or they will wander off. Make fences 2 blocks tall,
sometimes the animals bump into each other when they are jumping around and get knocked out of fenced in areas.
Q: Why did my baby stop following me? (shouldn't be an issue from Baby Animals versions 1.6 and up)
A: You ran too far ahead of it and it lost you. Go back to it and it will see you and start following you again.
Q: I'm getting a black screen after I login?
A: Please post the Modloader.txt file to the Baby Animals thread. Modloader.txt can be found directly in the .minecraft folder.
Q: Does this mod work with XXXXXX mod?
A: I don't know? Back up your minecraft.jar and try it out. If it is a ModLoader mod, there is a good chance it will. There is a short list in the forum thread of mods that other people have told me work OK. Check there.
Q: Are you planning to make baby monsters and/or other mobs?
A: No, sorry.
Baby Animals for SMP 1.7.3 only
If you'd like to try the (unfinished but stable(?)) SMP version I have for 1.7.3, you can get it here. Installation and Instructions
Spoiler
Before you plow ahead, be aware this is not Bukkit (or ItemCraft or any other of those) compatible!
It probably doesn't work with other SMP mods (maybe SDKs mods)
This is unfinished and may have bugs. Back up your server world and jar.
I HIGHLY recommend backing up your client side minecraft.jar so your singleplayer baby animals world can still be played later.
If you don't know what I am talking about or how to do the above things, I do not recommend trying to install this at all.
I'm probably not going to update this, take it or leave it as is.
You need the version of ModloaderMP found here. Follow it's directions for installation, then install BabyAnimalsMP on each of your clients and the server. Client installation is the same as singleplayer Baby Animals (Note: you cannot have both singleplayer and multiplayer Baby Animals installed at the same time) Server installation requires opening minecraft_server.jar and adding the files from BabyAnimalsMP_server.
How it works:
You have to feed a baby wheat before you can do any other interactions with it. This means seeds, lassos, cake, etc., will not work until you have tamed the baby.
Chicks must be tamed after they hatch.
If you want to give your baby animal to another player, you feed it a piece of cactus first. This makes it wild so the other player can tame it themselves. This only works on babies.
If the config file is changed on the server, the clients must use the same settings or weirdness will occur.
The rest is pretty much exactly the same as singleplayer Baby Animals, refer to the FAQ for the SSP version.
Item and Block ID's used (can be changed in properties file after mod has been installed)
If you are having trouble with other mods check the modloader.txt file in your .minecraft folder. It will tell you if there are ID conflicts.
Baby Animals Model Swapper for SSP and SMP 1.2.5
Replaces the vanilla baby models with the models I created. This does not have any of the other functionality of the the Baby Animals mod, so you do not need Modloader or Audiomod. Installation and Instructions:
Spoiler
Backup your minecraft.jar. It wouldn't hurt to back up your saves folder, either.
Unzip the downloaded Baby Animals Model Swapper file.
Open minecraft.jar using your preferred compression software (7-zip, WinRAR, etc.).
Copy the .class files and the 'mob' folder into minecraft.jar.
Delete META-INF if it exists.
Run Minecraft.
Alternate Textures/Compatible Packs If you are a texture pack artist, please feel free to make your pack compatible with Baby Animals!
Compatibility Add any of my mods at your own risk, back up your jars and saves, I won't be held responsible for failure to read directions, so on and so forth.
Mods that change the original animals will likely have issues with my mods, such as Wolves Extended. If you are having trouble with other mods check the modloader.txt file in your .minecraft folder. It will tell you if there are ID conflicts.
Credits/Shoutouts
I am not a programmer by trade and mostly followed examples of the existing code to make these mods. As such, I'm sharing them as they are, but you are welcome to figure things out for yourself if you wish! I could not have done this without Minecraft, of course, or the help on the #mcp-modding IRC channel, AudioMod, ModLoader, the Minecraft Coder Pack or Property Reader. Thanks everyone!
make it so when you walk over them, they explode into a bloody mess
Neat!
