Just an idea.. But similar to using redstone to put on the ground and even walls but using glowstone. That would make it able to be able to perhaps even brighten up some areas or make places look nicer.
Its a neat idea how you could light things up with dust but on the downside i would assume large amounts of lag simply because redstone creates lag because the block you place the dust on is always loaded even if you aren't in that chunk.
Sounds like an interesting idea. Wouldn't mind having another type of light source to use in decorating. Although I am uncertain what light level it will create. Since it is the dust I would say not 15 like the solid block, as that is a more condensed dust block. Possibly 14 like a torch... As it really doesn't need to be max.

A lighting mechanic does not create that much lag.... Redstone dust itself does not really create lag. It is the contraptions behind redstone mechanics that sometimes creates lag... Not only that the redstone machine would have to be running continously in order to be able to cause lag, if it does in the first place.
Having glowstone dust placeable like how redstone is placeable does not mean it is going to be included in those redstone mechanics... even if that would be interesting. All that was suggested was another light source I believe, from what I gather.
Either way I still like the idea.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I like that idea. Maybe a enhanced version would be to craft it with a blaze rod in a torch pattern and make glowstone torches, and what would be on top of the blaze rod when you place it is what looks like a glowstone crystal.
You can make designs on the ground. If you are like me, you kill blazes which drop glowstone. I probably have more glowstone than coal. This would make more efficient lighting. How about being able to put it on walls?

How would this be efficient? Im not being sarcastic or rude, but im just asking how?
If you are like me and kill more mobs than mine, I have more glowstone from killing blazes and have almost no use for it. Like chests full of it. The more use put into this, the better. Oh, and forum yoshi, why did you bash this topic? you didn't even give a reason. See, the thing is, if the people give reason why they don't like it, we that do like it can explain it in a way that might overturn their opinion.

I still dont see a purpose. I mean it will be good for you and others, but i dont see a purpose. Don't you think Mojang would've added this to the PC version a long time ago? If this could be placed on glass i think this would be a great idea, but for now i don't think so. You have great idea's, opinions, and topics, but for now you cant overturn me.

There is not enough use in glowstone. You can use jack o lanterns for almost anything that you can use glowstone for, except brewing, but the redstone is enough for brewing and glowstone strengthens it but makes it last a fraction of the time.

Isn't that enough uses? Why should it be used for something it can already do?

My guess it can at times be easier to get glowstone than coal and less tedious to make than charcoal sometimes.
If you have an exp farm in the nether that is.

I just say the contrast between things like glowstone dust and darker blocks would be simply amazing. Especially at night. That's why I think so. And besides?? Why not? Only thing you can use it for is when making potions... or making glowstone...
mmm... I don't understand how you don't but.. okay. I'll try explaining a bit more.
If you have super easy access to an Exp farm in the nether like I do.. It's easier to just go and get exp and glowstone dust than it is really to mine (Although I have mined so much at this point in my world.. lighting isn't an issue.. at all). So.. really it's just a new way of lighting that's also decorative at the same time.

Okay im seeing what your saying now. I might have your support if it could be placed on glass, because im making a glass dome that really isnt bright an i cant place torches on glass so why not glowstone dust. And plus i believe it wouldnt take more than 30 min to code.

Oh yeah I'd be thinking glass too.
Because Minecraft is the only game where you can make a building completely out of glass and it's STILL dark on a sunny day -,- lol

what would be the light output. 5 maybe less.
No support.
I agree, this just doesn't make sense.

But you can't have say just nice decorative lighting that's sort of faint.
Besides.. I'm not a huge fan of Jack-O-Lanterns... And I never use potions cause I don't really see the use in them.
