OK everyone Idk about you but I'm a little annoyed how uneducated people are in the field of texture packs and I'm tired of all the "Idk what to do" threads so I'm going to make a straitfoward tutorial that will hopefully get pinned up so these situations can be avoided.
Newbies welcome! feel free to ask questions and they hopefully will be answered!

INSTALLING A TEXTURE PACK ON A MAC Thanks to Camulos!
1. Download Texture Pack .zip
2. Open Finder
3. Navigate to Macintosh HD / Users / YOURUSERNAME / Library / Application Support / minecraft / texturepacks /
4. Move Texture Pack .zip file from downloads folder to texturepacks folder.
5. Start Minecraft and click "Mods and Texture Packs"
6. Select texture pack and click "Done"
NOTE: The only way of getting custom water, lava, portals, font, and fire is by using the HD patcher!
1. Make sure your minecraft has the default texture selected (mine looks like that because I have a texture patched in already)
2. Open up the patcher
3. Select the Desired pack
4. Patch the pack
5. Test the pack if desired, the patcher has never not worked for me, but if something goes wrong during the test you can copy paste the log in a nice code format
Like this
Tips
-You can patch a pack with a higher resolution and switch between packs of the same resolution but the water and lava will stay the same to the original patched pack
1. Download the Default texture pack or a Template
2. Download an image editor like GIMP for PCs or Seashore for Macs
3. Re-size it to the desired resolution (for HD texture packs)
4. Edit desired image save and upload
Tip
Make sure to properly label your texture pack in the title by adding
[WIP] = Work in progress
[16x16], [32x32], ect = resolution size
[1.3] = current version compatibility with minecraft
2. Right Click on your Desktop or folder and create a new zip folder( Not sure how this would be done on windows xp)
[MAC] you can just zip the folder up
3. Drag and drop the contents of the folder into the zip (DO NOT DRAG AND DROP THE FOLDER)
4. Test on your minecraft first and then distribute as you please
COMMON MISTAKES
-If you just zip the texture pack folder it will create a zip folder and then the original folder
-If you don't understand what i mean to solve this problem when you open the folder you should see the contents of the texture pack and not the folder of the texture pack
If i was unclear about anything please feel free to respond!
How about getting a sticky for this thread and you could also have a "link to other threads" section in it collection other threads with important or informative information?

the mod could be outdated check to see if the mod is beta 1.3 compatable, also make sure you patch before adding the mod

Minecraft and mods are up to date.
In a new and untouched minecraft.jar when i put only the texture pack, its works fine. But if i add mods, its goes to black screen.

It's been my experience, that you do the tex pack installed with the HD patcher, then add mods. If it black screens after that, check each mod for version and compatibility issues.

Sorry for bad grammar.
install modloader first...then the texture pack...test/backup minecraft.jar...install mods one at a time backing up after testing each one...you'll find the order you have to install for them all to work.
good example for myself..I have to re-install modloader with grass fix after installing GLSL shaders or Single Player Commands..not quite sure why but they break the sidegrass fix.

A good thing to add to your title as you let people know that it's ever evolving.
