Does anybody know where the actual 3d models are located for things like the player or mobs? I can't seem to locate the data for them in minecraft.jar

There are no models, they're bound together with code. There might be a generic "Cube" model in there somewhere, but that'd be five useless things in one convenient package.

In short, you won't be able to change the models in the game, just the textures.
I want to join you sleeping peaceful, feeling the sun in our room...

That's a little lame... especially if Notch plans on adding mod support, lest a separated models package would be part of that update.

There was an ol' youtube video showing notch playing the game with models from some ol' shooter. Probably doom or something. You could always ask him on smp.

There was some code to load MD4 (?) models but I don't know if it's still in there.

The mobs' models all start with Model[~] in MCP.
And the engine is Modelrender.java.
The player is defined as a "ModelBiped" in RenderPlayer.java.
So you have to change that class and make a new file for player.
I'm working on a project I will name AdvancedPlayer that will make
this and more, therefore I spotted this thread :3

Here a link to my project for changing the player's model: Link
