I did a search for th ideas I'm about to upload, and a few are on here, but not exactly as I had envisioned. So I'm going to include some of those ideas, I.E. vases and cups, just because they fall under my overall theme.

Clay Jugs

It would have the same uses as a bucket, however, some main differences:

1.) Jugs would have a durability bar. So after a set period of uses, they would break and disappear.

2.) Jugs can hold water or milk, holding the jug and right-clicking would place the source block of water (or make the milk disappear as normal.)  But you can place a jug (filled or not) on the ground just like cake, then you can use cups to take the liquid and drink it. (More on cups later.) Durability would apply as if you were using the jug by hand and it cannot be picked back up after setting it down.

Posted Image
Crafting would work as above, this creates an unfired jug.

Posted Image
Also, all unfired clay items can be converted back to their ball forms... So no more, "Dang, I wish I had a jug not a cup." But after the item has been fired, it will not work (obviously.)

Posted Image
This is the finished, fired version. (Coloration is based on the brick, and I was thinking something like terracotta.)

Clay Cups

Cups are something that I saw and people have spoken about, but I thought I should add it here.

Cups would be used to drink milk and water from jugs or to drink water straight from the water sources around your map. I saw someone mention salt/ freshwater differences, but all water in Minecraft is the same, so for this suggestion it will be treated as such.

Drinking a cup of water would only increase your health by half a heart, and drinking milk from a jug would increase your health by 2 hearts. The reasoning behind the waters stats are that water is plentiful and I'm trying to keep it balanced.

Cups also wouldn't have a durability bar, similar to wooden bowls. I figured smaller items would be better taken care of, such as leaving it at home on a shelf, verses a jug that would be toted everywhere.

Posted Image
The build for a cup. As you can see, you get only one cup per three clay balls... So choose wisely when firing.

Posted Image
And the fired version.

EDIT:
Due to some questions on my logic I did a rough action to health ratio... And it would be about 40 actions (clicks of the right mouse button) to take water from a source and then drink it, not including making the cup.

As for the most common food item, pork, it is about 12 (right clicks.) That covers hunting the pigs (assuming you get one pork per pig), putting the coal in the furnace, and cooking it then eating it. So two cooked pork chops and one uncooked.

Cups of water =40 actions = 10 hearts
Two cooked pork chops and one uncooked =12 (or less) actions = 10 hearts

Clay Vases

Another item that people have been taking about, but I actually have some polished ideas on the item.

Clay vases, like other clay items, must be made and fired in order to use. However, you can pick this item back up after you set it back down... But you lose the flowers that are in the vase, as if you were throwing out dead and dried flowers. Vases can also be set down without flowers, but come on, whats a vase without flowers?

Here is the vase build.

Posted Image
And the fired version...

Now the pretty version. (That you could maybe give to a girl you like on your server... Eh... Ehhhh. *wink wink, nudge nudge*

So what do you guys think?

I like the ideas a lot. But, I feel that you should not be able to drink water. Even if it only heals half a heart, still, you know how much water is in Minecraft? You can make an infinite spring when your about to die and heal yourself completely. But other than that, I love the vase, jug, and cup ideas!
WELCOME TO...

These are good ideas, and well thought through. I support them completely.

Except the drinking water one. Water is FAR too common.

Thanks for the input guys.

The only reason drinking water was even in there was because, well, there really isn't anything else to drink other than milk.

EDIT:

I added some stuff to help explain a bit... (See above description edit.)

I Like this idea a lot, practical uses for clay are something I look forward to seeing.

I especially like the vase idea, quite nice, makes flowers decorative.

Can I make a well with the jug, or is that more of a bucket thing? Maybe 3x3x3 sized and must be placed on a 1x1 water source?

:stone:  :|:  :stone:
:stone:  :D  :stone:

Would be the crafting layout
Where  :|: = string (couldnt find a string emote O.o)
and  :D = jug
and the wood block on top could be changed to fit your style, it could be iron or brick or even more stone :)

:grass:  :Water:  :grass:
:soil:  :soil:  :soil:
would be where you place it

Once the well is placed right click to lower and bring you jug, when the jug is full left click to take it into the inventory, left click with an empty jug out to hang it over the well?

At first I wasn't sure about this, but clay DOES need more uses and this would (hopefully) provoke notch into making it more common.

Cups & Vases are good ideas, but surley notch could just make buckets function like jugs rather than add a whole new item that makes buckets redundent?

I support Cups and vases  :)

But Jugs will make buckets obsilite. The idea of a Jug is good, but I feel that theres no point in making a new item, nd that buckets shold be made to do the same things as jugs.  :(

I do like the idea of a well, maybe to access source blocks that are far below or just to add atmosphere... But I think a bucket would be more suited for that.

And I would have to disagree about the jug making the bucket redundant. Jugs would break over time and buckets won't, buckets can hold lava and jugs can't, and jugs make milk a food item verses just another an item to later get cake.

I do agree with you on that clay needs more uses, and in nature it occurs a lot more than in Minecraft... But personally, the idea for a jug came to me when I was stuck underground and needed to get rid of lava, but iron was in very low supply. I know I was probably just in a rut of bad luck, but that's what inspired it.

Also, cups and vases for the win.

Seems like an awesome idea. A :) for you, because most people are starving with the amount of diamond and explosives they receive.

This is a great idea. Clay balls need a new use, and its not logical to drink out of buckets. I also think that water should only be able to drink water if it is purified, or from a spring. There should also be a pottery wheel, which could be crafted like this

I'll just say the same I said in the other clay thread you linked this one from. What you have there is a bunch of useless unfired stuff. By having a pottery oven (crafting table + furnace) you could get rid of having to make all the unnecessary items. You would have a crafting grid and a fuel slot under that aswell as the arrow and the slot for the finished product.
