Mojang said they were working on ''resource packs'' (on the update of 13w21a) which I assume is texture packs, sounds and language packs fused together in a format. This probably would make it easier to have custom maps that require such things.
I hate it when people post their computer parts in their signatures, like their bragging "Oh I have a fancy 1000$ computer that I built myself". No passerby is gonna care what computer you have.

Resource Packs will most likely be Sound Packs. In the .minecraft folder, the folder with all of the sounds in it is called Resources.

C418 was talking about a way to change the sounds, like texture packs a while ago. This is probably it.

Seriously. These "Achievement Get!" signatures were never funny, or interesting.

Resource packs are a new system that contain the ability to change textures, sounds, fonts, and more. They will be replacing texture packs.

...but that's just like, my opinion, man.

Fonts were part of texture packs, but the sound thing sounds cool. Finally, I would be able to replace all of those bad sounds (cow sounds, chicken walking, new sand) with good ones.

Sounds awesome. I better learn how to code before the API comes, I have some ideas for a cool mod.
OK.

It's what I did a year ago, I was kinda disappointed that the API hasn't been out for that year, so I moved onto other stuff. It's not a bad thing to learn, either.

Um, one bad thing about this: The Painterly Pack might die. I really hope Rhodox finds a way to make the new system work for the customizer. Painterly Pack is by far one of the best packs out there.

So after all this time I can play the game without listening to rusty doors and half dead cows?

You always could.

Yes, Resource Packs will allow for changing of textures, sounds, languages, fonts and more all in one. Also, you will be able to use more than one at once.

More then one at once? So like it would be super easy to make remix packs?

Where did you see that you can use more than one pack at a time? As far as I know, that is incorrect.

Quote from the gist linked above:

users will be able to apply multiple resource packs at once.

Dunno how he plans on handling conflicts if two packs modify the same things.  I don't see any mention of that.
Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

Ah, okay, thanks for clearing it up. And I'm assuming the JSON file will contain some sort of priority information.

So you could probably have epic boss music playing in a map?

The Darkness will win one day, and light's time being the winner is nearing it's end. Because light is overrated.
People, the Modification Development section is for MODS, not Bukkit plugins. Do not be surpised if you don't get any help from there.
