Sorry about the vagueness, got in a bit of a hurry, yes I am aware these things have been suggested before. As with just about everything, when there is a whole that can be filled, someone will try to fill it, whether it needs it or not. I am not saying it needs to be filled, but I do think it would bring a bit more strategy to the world of minecraft if you more weapon types were added with different capabilities. Each weapon would maintain a general level of effectiveness but would also get a bonus towards fighting certain types of mobs.
Mace: slow speed, heavy attack, has a chance to knock an opponent down. best versus skeletons and like mobs.
Sword: Fast speed, medium attack, short knockback has a chance for critical hit. best versus zombies and like mobs
Spear: Medium speed, Light attack, medium knockback slightly longer range over a sword and can be thrown a distance of 8 blocks. Having the extra reach on a weapon like this would make it effective against spiders.
Bow: Low speed, long range, can use arrows with different tips. i.e. stone tipped arrows, iron tips, gold tips.
Wands: Capable of being enchanted with a variety of spells and used against enemies, magic drains over time, renew with experience.
I know some people might be concerned that minecraft would turn into an RPG but at the same time some diversity amongst the weapon types would be a nice addition to strategy. In the medieval era, different weapons were used for different things. Say you want to effectively take on a spider rjockey, stone arrows because of their natural bluntness would be best used to kill the skeleton riding it, and then you could pull out a spear and go head to head with the spider. This could also be used in conjunction with multiplayer and new mobs. Like a new mob that can be spawned at random moments by a server admin that would require someone to knock it down with a mace before any damage could be done and then a sword would be required to get in enough damage on it in the short amount of time it is down.
Real weapons were not redundant, and in most games I have played I have seen where the devs failed to make weapon diversity actually usefull, but I believe the guys and gals at mojang could definitely do it. Now I know there are a lot of weapon mods out there that have this stuff or something similar, and thats all fine and dandy, but I think Mojang could do a better job with it, that and if this idea ever does get taken as a possible implementation, whether it be my idea or someone else, it would be nice to have something like this as a native part of the game.
I'm more concerned about the lack of detail and you not searching before posting. All of these have been suggested many times before, and usually in WAY better detail.

If it is a weapons suggestion (not likely), Swords and bows are already ingame, and maces/wands/spears are EXTREMELY redundant.
If it is a perks addon thing...well...same reasons as above. Also, you mention cavetrolls...there are no cavetrolls in Minecraft, so I am going to go ahead and call Wishlist.
