The suggestions section is buzzing with ideas for changes in the ocean biome. With biome updates planned at some point in the future, (Minecon 2012) it's fair to say both that Mojang is reading the forum and that some sort of ocean revamp is likely.
At this point, I think there's little doubt that many people want something more in the ocean biomes, and I thought it would be nice to represent all of those ideas in poll form. Here, you're free to discuss the possible selections.
If you have anything else to contribute to this poll, then you're welcome to. Let me know and I'll include it.
If you want your name removed from the poll, let me know; I tried to credit everybody who had proposed these ideas over the past few days/weeks.
Oceans are pretty lackluster compared to the rest of the world (and the rest of the world stinks too, so that's saying something). I'd definitely like to see oceans get improved.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I think that some oceans are way too big. I spent 30 minutes going straight and never got past one. New mobs or structures should be implemented into the ocean.
Oceans are incredibly bland, and some new structures and mobs would be nice.
Perhaps desert islands like in pirate movies (with palm trees, and the like) and maybe a chance of a loot chest buried there?
Having some sort of Atlantis type structure would definitely be fun, especially if there were both cities (inhabited) and dungeons of similar/same design (uninhabited, other than monsters.)
Also, imagine a potion that would allow you to move on dry land like you swim (like the Atlantis command in Single Player Commands back in 1.2) probably a bit OP, but fun.
I'm also thinking we could find some undersea plants that could serve some purpose, although I can't think of much beyond Sushi...
This would also open up the possibility of functional sponges in survival!
There's definitely a lot of potential, but chances are, not much will be added. Knowing Mojang, they'll probably implement some small things to improve oceans which don't add too much but hold a lot of potential when combined with redstone/mods.

Some kind of palm tree would be nice(these could be found in deserts also but get rid of water pools everywhere and make rare oasis where these trees can be found)
Sponge and or coral growths(made in a block format)
Starfish (that you can collect and use as a placeable decoration)note: these don't necessarily have to be 'alive', just found on ocean floor.
Clams (similar to starfish above but give clam meat when harvested which has a low food value to supplement diet for ocean survival, perhaps pearls as a rare drop too if a good use can be made of them)
I would love to see seaweed/kelp
One issue I see with anything that belongs in the water that we can interact with that is not a block(i.e. kelp), is that if it is suspended in a block of water it may be difficult to pull off without a lot of coding issues.
Okay. I added two sub-polls with different types of fish and different potential types of biomes, since Dinnerbone's definitely implementing the former and many people seem to want the latter.
I also added clams, palm trees, sponge and coral growths, and seaweed/kelp, as well as adding algae, due to an earlier suggestion by the user Ouatcheur.
I'm sorry for those of you who voted on the biome question. For some reason, I had it set to single choice rather than multiple choice. If you voted on that question, you're welcome to change your answer.
Back in beta 1.7.3 i built my first underwater house. I've been making this same rant ever since. Why is it that we can go fishing, but there are no fish in the ocean, and we still catch fish?! It seems like they just said "Ok, while we're creating all these awesome biomes, lets just toss in an ocean that stretches for thousands of blocks with absolutely nothing in it!" Then you occasionally find some squid. You finally turn around and return home, only to find your pool filled with squid. They should change the squid spawning so they only spawn in naturally generated water.
EDIT: You should add whales and dolphins to the poll

A double resolution texture pack that stays faithful to the original Minecraft textures.
If you want to know what my idea for nurse sharks entail, you can see the thread here.

All right. I've added that to the poll!
Added the desert islands to the poll.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.

All right. Whales and dolphins added.
