When this system renders extreme heights (in this case, looking up a deep hole, looking towards the floor of an ocean, observing a tall structure) there is a limit to how far vertically one can see, so how does the limit of your view render? Currently, if Minecraft renders 10 chunks around you, the 11th is just not there, so would the same apply here, but on the y axis? If that's true, it would make the 3 examples look less awesome. Is there a plan to address that?
Thing is, how good would those be for people that can barely run small at 20fps? They would be a boring, short hillside unless this actually allows you to gain enough fps to experience it at a further view distance. Otherwise, they are boring, and very dramatic hills that jut out of nowhere that you can barely see due to frame rates. What will happen then?
^^ Culprit.
We are currently working on fixing the problems, but we need more help. Zwei, Shibe, Sherlock, everyone, please come help!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOO......
My beautiful example of 16*16*16 chunks is ruined!

There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,

We've brought it back a lot since those screenshots Watchman. Good news is that they only hit spawn. Everything else is safe.
Thank goodness.

Heh, I don't either, but I get by pretty good.

EDIT: Why is my location set to the cubic chunks server? Did someone hack my MCF account?!
To have infinite height you must have infinite depth. You cannot have one without the other. Not with the way Cubic Chunks works.

Sounds like you've invoked the wrath of a Russian hacker gang...
I just thought of something regarding depth... The current problem is that, even if you make stone go on infinitely, how do you distribute ores? How do you distribute caves? Simply having an infinite expanse of stone yields a few problems that are not exactly easy to solve.
So, rather than placing a hard limit, or removing the limit altogether; make it so that the deeper you go, the slower you mine.
You could also make veins spawn ever less frequently, but be far larger in size. Conventional mining would still work up until a point, but it would become ever less efficient as you went down. A long way underground, say 256 blocks below the current bedrock layer, it may take several times longer to break each block. However, if a vein was found at this depth, it may contain several hundred ore blocks. Due to the specific concentrations of the ore blocks, certain mining tactics could actually end up being extremely beneficial.
There would eventually be a point at which it takes so long to break the blocks that it would no longer be worth going down any more, but the world would still be infinite.
Just some (very insubstantial) food for thought.

That's not a bad idea, and realistically, it makes sense because stone in the real world tends to become denser the farther down into the crust you go due to more pressure, which is partially why metamorphic rocks exist.
Also, coal ore sounds like it should only be found closer to the surface, meaning its occurrence rate should actually decrease instead of increase the farther you go underground. It's already the most common ore in the game as it is anyway.
"Frustated of the deepground's unbreakability, Steve tried to make pickaxes from different non-mainstream minerals. He found out that gold picks still break deepstone quite fast, so he went to the nether. We never see him again... "says a testificate.
ts;dr: more pickaxe tier or some sort of ProSthetics tool-making.

Lol... But would that not be a good use for gold?
I'm just starting to imagine my idea in conjunction with Factions, Tinkers Construct, some random new materials (that generate very far underground)... Further into the game = Better tools = better mining = progress further... textbook progression.
DAMMIT MOJANG DO CUBIC CHUNKS ALREADY!

Yeah, gold should be more useful than making golden carrots and apples.
And regional difficulty should take care of the better swords. Or should we introduce stat-increasing level to players, mobs, and animals? Hmm.
