The Harlem shake is a dance that originally began in Harlem, New York, in 1981.

Though starting in 1981, the Harlem shake became mainstream in 2001 when G. Dep featured the dance in his music video "Let's Get It".

A band from New York City took the name of the dance and dubbed themselves Harlem Shakes. "Harlem Shake" is a song by Baauer, an American producer from Brooklyn, New York. The song was uploaded to YouTube on May 10, 2012, and went viral in February 2013

"Harlem Shake" is a song recorded by American DJ and producer Baauer. It was released as a free digital download by Mad Decent imprint label Jeffree's on May 22, 2012

In February 2013, a YouTube video set to "Harlem Shake" that developed into an internet meme. The media response to the meme helped increase the single's sales, as it reached number 12 on the US Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

Harlem Shake is an Internet meme that went viral on YouTube in February 2013. The meme is in the form of a video that began being replicated according to a similar concept by many people.

The art form of the meme was established in a video uploaded on February 2 by The Sunny Coast Skate, five teenagers from Queensland, Australia. The teenagers' video, in its turn, was a follow-up to a video by a YouTube comedy vlogger named Filthy Frank featuring a part where several costumed persons danced to the song "Harlem Shake" by Baauer.

A dance came out in 1981.
A band took the name of the dance and called them selves the "Harlem Shakes" and a producer called Baauer made the song "Harlem Shake".
Then some teenagers decided to make a youtube video of themselves dancing to the song and the youtube video became popular. The meme did NOT start in Harlem.

The dance and song came from New York and the meme came from Australia I guess

I thought the army one with the guy spazzing out in the sleeping bag was the start of the Harlem Shake parody videos.
Bad people don't stay bad forever.

I think it was made in Brooklyn, or possibly Manhattan.

It didn't start in Harlem:

So, don't ever do that in Harlem unless you like being chased out of town or beaten in the streets.
