I recorded a video, but something went all weird, so you get screenshots and a level save instead. I've given up on the video.

Basically, it consists of two 2x2 shafts with 2 non-shaft spaces between them, for a total width of 2x6 (4x8 including walls)

Pattern is like this:

EDIT: 2x5 version. Works better, only needs the overhand if you have a low ceiling at the top.

You must have at least partial walls at the "start" of each vertical direction to make sure the boat doesn't overshoot the shaft. If you're digging this into the ground, it won't be an issue.
The wooden catcher at the top should not pose a threat to your health, and is essential to the operation of this thing. Without it, the boat spends too much time bouncing up and down to get enough speed to make it into the down shaft.

You should be able to figure out what order to do things in to get the correct water flow at the top. Once the top is done, you should just be able to drop two water springs at the far side of the bottom. Once it's complete, just drop a boat in and go!

If you time it right, you can get two boats going on this one at once. Maybe more if it were taller. i tried making three, but couldn't get the third in before another one came by and jammed the whole thing.

I just finished implementing something similar. Works well. Yours is a bit better though as I haven't even begun to touch up. :) Nice

Theoretically, how many spring blocks would you need for this? Noticed you didn't use buckets and stuff.

Four. Two at the top, two at the bottom. I used an inventory editor so I could focus on designing the thing and not have to spend an hour gathering resources first.

Looks simple.
Personally I believe I would spend too much time designing the thing to be aesthetic before functional :Pig:
I'm sure a compromise can be found.

I managed to fit the elevator in a 5x2 space. By somehow glitching the top water so that it didn't pour over into the 2x2 drop tube. Odd, but it works. ;D!

Ooh. I'd be interested in seeing how you got that to work.

I installed one of these into a leftover strip quarry in my main world, I can get to and from my bedrock-level mines in no time!

I was just trying to get it to work. That world exists only so I could design this thing. The one in my mine looks a little better, I suppose, but I guess it's still just a pair of cobblestone platforms...

This is amazing. What happens if you toss in several boats at once?

I'll go ahead and assume you'll have several boats falling down and then floating back up.

Do not wallow do not stall
Time waits for none at all
Your allowance may crawl,
It may fly or even vanish
But none will seem more lavished
Than time lost to all.

^Pretty much that.
I'll take another stab at the video.

As for tossing in multiple boats, it depends on how tall it is. On the one int he level save I posted, I was able to get two going at once. A third *might* be possible, but I couldn't get it to work. It's tricky, because if they do bind up at any point and get stuck on eachother, when you try to get it going again one or both of them usually gets broken.

EDIT: Wow, okay, my screen recorder really doesn't like minecraft. I'll have to find another one.

Very impressive. And it gets better once you remove the wooden safeguard over the water column. :-)

Two things: Boats no longer fit in a 1x1 hole, and how are you going to reach that block from the floor below?

If we get floodgates (and maybe some way of transmitting a redstone signal straight up), that idea would work brilliantly, though.

If you use the 2x5 version harukastu posted, you don't need the safegaurd unless your ceiling is low, at which point it could still save you from getting your head in a block.
