This may sound like a nasty little trick, but silverfish disguise the blocks of stone they're in as a random ore. This could be a fun little prank to pull on friends, if you can lure some silverfish into the stone.
I understand that griefers could use this to some extent, so it should be able to be disabled in a server.
Example:
You decide to go into a stronghold, you've got nothing else to do. You walk along one of the shafts, when you spot a gleam of gold. You could swear you've never seen it before, and looks kinda funky, sticking out of the wall like that. Whatever. It bursts open, and a silverfish jumps out at you.
You got fake ore rolled
MECHANICS:
Will not take up existing ore, only stone.
Will take the most common ore of that level
Cannot be Emerald, That's just to much of a kick in the teeth.
They have a rare chance of dropping the ore as well
Ores will be slightly darker than normal
If enough people want, it cannot imitate Diamond either
EDIT: This applies to strongholds only, unless you set up a silverfish spawner, which is your own fault.
Me like. Think of a survival island type custom map. OOOOH, DIAMOOOOOONDDDDDDDDZZZZZZ!!!!! HUUUUGE VEEEEIN!!!!!!! And then... OMFG EVIL DIAMOND SILVERFEESH!
i agree you should still get the ore but you get a little nasty silverfish
No, this wouldn't effect the spawnrate of ore. The silverfish would pop out and no ore. Fake ores. These would only appear in/near strongholds, instead of around the world.
Yeah, I'm sure it might be funny the first couple of times when it happens to you or you trick someone else, but eventually that crap is gonna get real old and annoying and you'll beg for it to be removed from the game. Because finding a few diamonds after an hour of searching only to be greeted by silverfish is something that everyone totally wants.

Or the whole game entirely.
This is only around strongholds, and strongholds aren't the most common, if I recall correctly. This is just something to make that area all the more difficult.

I guess that's alright then, but as I'm typing this very post, you didn't mention that this was a stronghold thing in your first post. This wouldn't be so bad with coal, iron, possibly lapis or maybe even gold, but I think diamond and emerald should be exempt here.

Since Silverfish don't spawn anywhere else, it's safe to assume it's a stronghold thing. I will update the post though.

Diamond and Emerald fakes should exist, but only in creative/mcedit/whatever for custom maps.
Make it less vague, it is worded weird, I mean I get it and a lot of others do but it only takes a handful for the thread to go away.
Way to help: Give a specific example.
Now to my opinion:
I think that they should only be able to do this by themselves under ground where there is absolutely no light, cause if they just spawned in house blocks that would be nuts. I mean to just be mining and then BAM! that would be awesome and fair. I also think that they shouldn't take up already existing blocks they are just space fillers in caves and what not.
All in all though I actually.... Support this idea!

You should probably make another type of silverfish or maybe just keep the way it is.
That seems a bit unnecessary, this is only a behavior modification. I don't think people would complain that much if they hid in fake ores as opposed to stone. This would acctually give people a chance to spot the silverfish ore, since it would be darker.

Also, here is an awesome suggestion I had: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1745550-biome-effects/

Right on man, it is a good idea, I'd hate to see it go to waste.
