I was under the impression that Silk Touch can be used to pick up and move Dungeon Spawners but I tried with a silk touch enchanted pickaxe and all that happened was it broke the spawner and gave me some XP's ?

You cannot move a dungeon spawner, under any context. That is placed only by the world.

You can't collect mob spawners.

Silk Touch only works on the following (from the wiki, some of the stuff we can't get with silk touch yet like ice, others aren't in the game yet):

Items which can be obtained legitimately only through use of Silk Touch: grass block, coal ore, lapis lazuli ore, diamond ore, redstone ore, emerald ore, ice, powered redstone lamps, huge mushroom blocks, mycelium, cobweb. Silk Touch does not work on: cake, carrots, cocoa pod, dead bush, fire, double slabs, farmland, melon and pumpkin stems, monster spawner, nether wart, potatoes, snow, tall grass, wheat, sugar cane.

Even if it did work, when you put the monster spawner down, all it would do is spawn pigs. It would no longer spawn whatever hostile mob it was coded for.
Lucifer - "So you're willing to die for a pile of cockroaches? Why?"
Gabriel - "Because dad was right. They are better than us."
Lucifer - "They are broken, flawed, abortions!"
Gabriel - "Damn right they're flawed, but a lot of them try to do better."

That would rule, actually. Set it up over a long drop, over a water delivery stream = unlimited pork chops!

Mob spawners have different spawn rules than "normal world mob spawns". They can even spawn mobs in mid air or over water. Posted Image

Wish you could, but it isn't that easy. Using the /give command can give you one but it will only be coded to give you a pig spawner. Nonetheless it would be good enough for unlimited porkchops
