Obsidian is currently (usually) mostly used for just for the nether portal and enchanting table. Even though it takes a long time to mine, it is easy to find or create. My suggestion is that you should be able to turn it into a decorative block(s). All pics below are 'before and after' pics.

First, smelt obsidian into 'Smooth Obsidian'.


Now, craft that into slabs or stairs.



Then it would be possible to turn 2 slabs into a pillar block, similar to quartz or sandstone.


Finally, you could craft smooth obsidian with and emerald to make 'Encrusted Obsidian'. This could be a decorative block ad a utility such as a block that creates light and scares monsters away.

PS The texture of the chiseled obsidian here is wrong, here is the correct face texture: http://i.imgur.com/qQn8KQ0.png

For anyone that thinks I recolored quartz or something to make these blocks, you are wrong  These were all made from scratch in Photoshop

Hmmmm. I like it. I can't see any reason to not like it. Plus then you could make a creeper proof house that wasn't hideous or that had multilayered walls.

I'm not sure how practical using obsidian would be for the suggested building materials

however, saying that... I really do like the idea of an anti-quartz more sinister building material being added!
so certainly a decent idea, my main concern is just how practical it wold be to obtain...

But I remember crying obsidian not being too pretty, maybe it could somehow be functional? It was supposed to be a re-spawn block, but then beds were introduced so it would no longer be useful with that function. Maybe it could have an anti encrusted obsidian effect, and attract all kinds of mobs. Could be useful for framing, while the encrusted for protecting your home.

Also, How about the Encrusted Obsidian should not produce light, but only have a glowing green pattern? And instead of scaring monsters away, it only gives a protection radius which does not allow spawning of hostile mobs and bats?

Now it would look cooler and also allow dark rooms which are safe and bat-proof

But i also feel like Obsidian should have something unique to it.

Would be awesome to use the strenght of obsidian block in a way, Obisidan door maybe ? Obsidian windows they should black when viewed from one side and transparent from the other or something.

I prefer the idea of being able to add obsidian to a block to change the color and designs of those blocks. All you did was recolor quartz blocks, and obsidian is a B**** to break down, it's not worth building out of.

Yes!  So many bunkers made out of obsidian look horrible.  Mabe add the ability that smooth obsidian blocks players nametags completely (without croutching).

Ummm I did not recolor anything to make the textures, I made them completely from scratch in Photoshop FYI. Plus I did think that the obsidian should get softer or easier to break once smelted.

This would give Obsidian a reason to be mined other than enchanting and a portal. Moreover, it has more than just one texture.
