They are the best option: as compact as 2x2x3 and easy on/off with with levers.
If you wait a minute I'll upload a picture
Nvm R.I.P. the old machine guns

This can be used to auto empty droppers and dispensers as well as vertical item transportation.

The subtract function of the comparator makes a very fast clock, as fast as redstone can update it seems.
Machine Gun (auto empties but can be set to turn on and off)

It's only one wider then the comparator only version and at least it's something. I've been scrambling to fix whatever I can where I used comparators to force updates.

This makes a 1 tick pulse if not a little bulky, it can also easily be modified into a piston-less t-flip-flop which is now my standard choice.

I'm not arguing this particular one should be kept around, but your reasoning for why is horrible

Comparators arent really that great of a thing to use for that (due to possible unwanted interaction with redstone)
Maybe it would be better if we could get a simple directional block that forces updates on the 6 blocks it's pointing at much like a comparator did (but now with 2 more directions
