In my opinion there is no "best weapon", it always depends on who uses the weapon, where it is used and with which other weapons it is combined. For example a sword with Sharpness V would be useless agains an unarmored player, who sits 20 blocks over you and is armed with a bow. For killing an AFK player without anyone knowing it was you, two blocks of gravel or a water bucket would be the ideal choice (because lava takes long to clean up).

Don't forget the thorn enchantment on your chesplate. That enchantment hurts the enemy if it hits you. With a high thorn and a strong sword you are a very deadly weapon.

You guys seem to think that god swords and super bow are the best, and it is true... unless your enemy is wearing god diamond armor set, in which case i would sugest using instant damage pots, because armor doesn't work on them.

Bow and arrow. Ranged weapon, can do insane damage with enchantments.
If someone gets too close, I'll grab my 'Surprise knife' which is an iron sword with sharpness IV Knockback II and slice them up.

It does, but only on select monsters. Sharpness is more universal.

I wish there were more weapons in Minecraft. I'm sick of using swords. Every "what is the best weapon?" thread tends to result in a crazy-enchanted sword or a crazy-enchanted bow and maybe lava or gravel as well.
