This is something I have seen around a few times but very quickly gets buried in the sea of posts, And is usually only one sentence so here goes.

Haybale Block

Made by 9 wheat in the 3x3 crafting grid, W is wheat, WB is wheat block

W W W
W W W ----> WB
W W W

Now this has multiple uses.

First - And formost its a storage block for all that wheat.

Secondly -  A building block (Straw roofing anyone :D)

Thirdly - Can be used to Reduce fall damage (no idea how much by)

Fourth and this is the fun bit.

Using the 2x2 (or the 3x3) grid, place a Hay-bail ontop of a cauldron To make a Animal feeder (A cauldron with hay in it)

When placed will allow 3 pairs of animals to breed automatically, The remaining Hay cannot be eaten (But can be collected by breaking the block) Instead this acts like a tether. Any animals within a 10 block raidius will not wander any further than 10 blocks away from the cauldron unless lured by food held by a player.

The main function of this is to stop animals hugging fences/gates/doors and (On multiplayer) glitching through said containments because the Ai is stupid.

Thoughts !!

1.) Suggested before. A lot.
2.) Not that useful. Packing wheat in a block isn't as important as packing most other materials in blocks.
3.) If you seen this idea before many times, you should've known this thread would be redundant.
4.) Water can already be used to negate fall damage.

1 - I know this I stated it already,

2 - Did you read the other uses

3 - People scoffed at the idea of a television when they were first invented, Now everyone has at least one. (Its how the idea is presented)

4 - As can ladders/ boot enchant/ spiderweb/ being in a minecart, heck even lava (thought this is tricks and ya needs water nearby) Whats your point.

My point is making a block that that is

A - USEFUL
B - DECORATIVE
C - Has more than one use

Oh and also helps to negate a current issue with keeping livestock on single or multiplayer and thats the animals hugging walls/fences/gates and doors and then glitching through getting stuck and dieing. (And it happens ALOT)

1.) Then you should have known that this thread might get locked for redundancy.
2.) Wheat storage. Breeding. Decoration. Yeah, I got all that.
3.) The hell are you talking about here..?
4.) Congrats. You just further proved my point. Why make this wheat block cancel out fall damage when we have all that other stuff?

Animal pens can be designed in such a way to prevent all that.

Only design I know is using water currents, witch then can cause them to drown.

And as for point 4, Let me put it another way, we already have the dirt block, why would we want wood/stone/cobble/mossy coble ect ect.

For different looks, Ok ya don't like the little perks, Fine I can live with that, But how about for decoration !

I think animals should be able to take wheat and other breeding materials out of some new type of chest so we can automate our farms with the new hopper. It's also much simpler.

Actually, there are about a hundred different designs of animal pens that keep them safe. basically any 5x5x3 space that has a water block in each corner will keep animals in the center and that's the simplest design with water and they literally cannot escape or drown. But regardless, the animals escaping and glitching into walls and dying is a bug, and it should be put on the bug tracker if it isn't on there already. There is no reason to implement a block that has a feature intended to work around a bug when the bug can just be fixed in the first place. I'm not against the idea itself, but I'm not quite done breaking apart your argument and reasoning either.

As for the thing with dirt, cobble, wood, etc. The answer is so obvious that you wasted your time saying that, as did Theriasis by contesting it. The reason is that multiple blocks opens the doors to more crafting recipes and new items. A dirt furnace wouldn't make sense, neither would a dirt ladder. But you are right, that there is no harm in it negating some fall damage too. The only problem is it really can't. Liquids can because that is how they work but to my knowledge a solid block cannot do the same thing.

But as for your actual reasoning for why it should be added, I like it. Automated Breeding, aesthetics, and cage free animal pens. Support.

I am kind of torn between the two sides. Though this might become handy it is still on the verge of mod territory as its only uses are ways to either simplify or duplicate already existing effects.

I am more in favor of involving the hopper than anything else really as that block is new and can definitely have more features related to it.

And far from all blocks in Minecraft serve other purposes than aesthetically ones; we have all except one kind of wood, neatherquartz-pillars, different kinds of woodblocks, stone brick etc, there are a lot of them. And yet they are USED!

A block of wheat has definitely been suggested before, what makes this thread non-lockable is its other values, so that argument sadly falls, theriasis.

And a way to compactly store wheat is longed for, I would need it, both for its compact storage and for its decorative value. Though I have one suggestion, make it only needed to use 4x4 wheat to craft it as the need is for compact storage is not as big as say coal (another oreblock in suggestion-state) but it is still useful. Another reason is that for people that needs a basic material and only has big farms this block may come in handy, thus the reduced crafting-size.

Over all I am leaning towards support, by following my rant you will probably understand why. It is far from a perfect fully fledged vanilla suggestion but it is getting there.

Support, I don't see why there is none, and this is much more fleshed out than many other threads.

I have seen at least two threads with the same qualities.

I always thought some kind of trough would be nice. I can thing of a few uses of this hay block, as oversuggested as it is. If I placed a trail of hay blocks, the animals I was leading would steadily eat through them to arrive at a destination. Perhaps that if then animals in question are already ready to breed, they will keep eating the hay anyway. I like the idea of hay roofing as well, as long as it comes in a stair format and is burnable, try to form.

Hey there, this general idea was suggested very recently and in a bit more detail, if you'd like you can continue the discussion of it here.
