Sky Den

The Arcadia Show's Sky Den Teaser

Somewhere in the vastness of another universe, there is a realm of endless sky. And every so often, by powers not fully understood, individuals are torn from their world and thrown here, into the infinite sky.

You have just found yourself transported to the sky realm. Abandon hope of getting home, for if you want to survive, you will have to make your home here. Farm resources, avoid lethal drops, expand your world by hand, try to make your way in this strange place, and most importantly, find the other stranded souls who call the mysterious Sky Den their home. If you want to thrive in this hostile world, you will certainly need their help!

CaptainSparklez recently began LPing this map. Welcome to all who've been brought by his videos!

Overview

Sky Den is a new beast of Sky Survival maps. It features NPCs, quests, and plenty of challenges to help bolster the traditional Sky Survival experience. It's a low-pressure but high-risk map that encourages free building, and has been carefully balanced to provide an expansive and emergent experience to any player. Unlike many Sky Survival maps, Sky Den has been designed to allow every material and item in the game to be renewable. You can build an infinite world and craft whatever you like, without having to worry about running out of diamonds, or not having enough iron.
The map features a progression of resources that is structured using NPCs, Quests, and Challenges. Utilize the tools at your disposal and work with the world's strange and colorful inhabitants until at last the secrets of the Sky Den are at your complete control!

Sky Den is a mod-assisted map! It comes packed with the necessary mods to allow you to progress. It cannot be played vanilla!
All mod authors have their mods linked and credited in the topic, pack, and tags. This is not a mod pack - it is a specific map reliant on specific mods and not intended to be used for other purposes.

Features

  • A traditional Sky Survival experience: Start from humble beginnings on a tiny island in the sky, and from there build up and out, until an entire world completely of your own design has grown and flourished around you. No caves, no tunnels and mines, just open sky and your own creativity in a fight for survival and success.
  • A cast of interactive characters: Over half a dozen NPCs have made their home in this realm. Find their home, the Sky Den, and find them! They'll offer challenges, trades, and items to help you progress. Each character is custom-designed with their own skin, dialog trees, inventories, and more.
  • A Quest system that encourages and deepens the Sky Survival experience, rather than distracting from it. Challenges are built in to the map, rather than just being a list in this topic. Instructions are included with books and quests, in-game, and a carefully-structured system of rewards will help you progress through tiers.
  • Balanced and renewable resources are available. Unlike many Sky Survival maps, Sky Den has been designed to ensure that every single block in the game can be farmed. There's nothing you'll be without, or face the risk of running out forever (barring just tossing all your stuff off the edge, of course).
  • A precisely-constructed sky realm: Several islands are scattered near the start. Make your way to them and discover what they have to offer, and find the eponymous Sky Den itself!

Getting Started and Map Rules

Rules are rules! Cheating and breaking the map is possible, but you're only runining it for yourself. Here are the basic guidelines:
Spoiler:

Download

  • Version 1.1 for Minecraft 1.4.6 and 1.4.7 - Includes Cosmic Patch
  • Cosmic Patch 1.1 for players using Sky Den 1.01.
The Cosmic Patch is recommended, but not necessary, for people on Sky Den 1.01. It will fix a bug with one of the NPCs (Hennepin) and will rebalance trades to make certain resources easier or quicker to get.
You can install the Cosmic Patch even if you've already started playing this map. However, part of this patch will reset anything you have built in a certain area right around the Sky Den. The part of the patch that does this is optional. It affects a very small area (the Sky Den itself, and an area between the Sky Den and the "halfway" stone block that leads to the starter island).
Your quest progress will not be reset.

  • Version 1.01 for Minecraft 1.4.6 and 1.4.7

Hi, sorry if I missed it or something, But where can I get the texture pack you use, and is it at all required?

The texture pack is a custom version of the lovely Painterly Pack by kas, which you can find here.
But no, it isn't required to play. Any texture pack will do. Custom textures for the NPCs are provided with the download and are used independently, so it doesn't matter which pack you use, if any.

A Minecraft map by Weaver?
Oh god does this deserve a bump. I've never tried a Sky Adventure map before, but it really sounds awesome. I'll be checking this one out when it's NOT 5:12 AM and infringing on my sleep!

Very excited for this.

So far the map is pretty sweet. Just a question: Where am I able to get iron to make the inert stone? I got silver, but no iron.

EDIT: Also I can't find any crafting recipes for Brass, Nitor and Alumende. Any help?

It can be played multiplayer, if you know how to set up a multiplayer server using the mods installed. However, because of the small starting area, it's likely that additional players will have problems spawning.
Your best bet to counteract this is use OP commands when a new player joins and /teleport them to you so they'll be on solid ground. When possible, make sure to all sleep in the beds provided, so that if you fall you'll spawn on land rather than in the air.

I wanted to play and also do a series but I think it might take me longer to install because MAgic Launcher isn't finding any mods for CustomNPCs so I will have to do it manually so the series might have to wait till tommorow when i get home from school.

EDIT: Got it working and I will start the series tommorow! :D

I've gotten a complaint saying that there is a late-game quest that requires teleportation and may be bugged for some players. What determines this I don't know, since the CustomNPCs Transport system is still very finicky. If after you receive the quest "The Four Trials" and talk to Hennepin, he does not transport you even after you ask, here is what you do:
Give yourself an NPC Wand. This can be done through NEI.
Equip the wand and right click Hennepin.
On the tabs at the top, choose "Advanced"
To the right of the box labeled "Transporter" you'll see a button that says "Edit". Click that.
Click "Default" in the center of your screen.
Click on the box that says "default name" and type something in here, like "Home". It doesn't matter what you name it.
Make sure the box below it says "available when discovered". If not, click on that box until it does.
Click back.
Click the X in the upper right to close the NPC edit interface.
Destroy the NPC wand or toss it from the edge.
Right click Hennepin (without the wand equipped) and choose "I'm ready for the trials!"
The transport menu should open up as it was meant to.

Not everyone runs into this bug. But if you do, it only takes about 30 seconds to fix.

I encountered an isue (most likely with the incorrect installation of the mods on my part) where I can not seem to find the block breaker?

EDIT: Looks like somemone gets to restart the series and install the mod correctly! :D

Are Mob Dismemberment or Mob Amputation required at all for this?  For one, it drops double the amount of gibs that it's supposed to.  For two, it crashes minecraft if a gib hits a nether portal, it seems.  For three, chopping off a skeleton's arms doesn't prevent it from shooting arrows, unlike what the mod says.  Also the blood effect just floats in the air a lot of the time.

I'm playing it.
1. https://mlkshk.com/p/NHZE
2. http://mlkshk.com/p/NIN2
3. http://mlkshk.com/p/NKUS

There are some annoyances that may need debugging.
* the inventory screen has "give yourself anything," which I know I'm supposed not to use but it's right there in my face, man.
* when trading with an NPC, I accidentally Ctrl-clicked an item, and I got 64x of that item deposited in my inventory for free.  That can't be something you intended.  I had to figure out how much stuff I should throw in the void to keep it fair.
* this weird inventory screen's "SAVE" buttons cover the left 25% of any large game interfaces, like the enchantment table.  I haven't seen this enchantment table interface before, and I think the text behind the 'SAVE' buttons was supposed to help me.  I ended up enchanting a shovel by pressing the bits between buttons at random.
* those light-panels on the island outside the NPCs sky-den?  The light-panels don't prevent monster spawns.  I've had to chase zombies and skeletons that head into the building, and try to hit them without hitting the NPCs or the little pup.  This is nerve-wracking, and I'm certain it wasn't your intention.  I ended up violating your 'don't mess with this island' rule to put sufficient torches to prevent monsters spawning.
* Respawning isn't at the bed, like with normal single- and multi-player maps I've played.  Instead, my respawn is a random direction and distance from my bed.  I died many times in a row before I land on the home island.  I ended up building a 20x20 'safety-net' and I hope it's big enough to catch me.
* One of the major quests requires I'm make a "wand."  This isn't a normal minecraft item, and nobody's told me the recipe.  How'm I supposed to know the recipe? (Do one of the other NPCs tell me as the result of a sidequest?  I don't think so, I haven't seen any new sidequests after seeing to the Herbalist's ample melons. And by that I mean her fruit.)

On the plus side: I can see your hand in the NPC text and art, and this feels good.  The sky-box maps never appealed to me before this one.

I've had some pleasant facepalm moments.  Here's one: on my first trip in the Nether, I forgot not to use normal blocks for the floor.  After building my bridge halfway out to [REDACTED], I looked back and saw what must've been sixteen chunks worth of zombie pigmen all huddled around the few normal blocks I left around the portal, trying not to push each other off.  I tried rebuidling the floor, but, well, crowded small area, one pigman stepped in front of my pickaxe, and took grave offence.  Much of my blood was spilled before they felt their honor was restored for the great toe-stubbing incident.

No. Those mods are not required.

View PostMozai, on 25 January 2013 - 05:20 AM, said:

* the inventory screen, etc
Regarding the inventory screen, the whole NEI interface and most of its quirks can be turned off if you hit O in the inventory screen. You can highlight items and hit R or U to see that item's recipe or the recipes it is used in, respectively, so it is useful. Also if there's a bug, sometimes you may have to cheat out of necessity.

Wands can be made with one dull shard, one stick, and one gold nugget arranged in that order diagonally. (Any kind of elemental shard will do but at that point dull is all you'll have access to.) You can see the recipe by highlighting a gold nugget and hitting R.

Lighting: I haven't run into or even heard of that lighting problem before, and the Redpower Lanterns should work like any other light source. I'm not sure in what situation they wouldn't, since anything that gives off light is inherently fending off monsters. The systems aren't separate. If there's light, monsters shouldn't spawn. I don't know what's causing the problem, but I can't say I've ever heard of it. Either way it may be a problem in Redpower's compatibility.

Lastly, the spawn situation: Early on in multiplayer spawn points can be an issue, but in singleplayer your spawn should be tied to the bed by default. And once you've slept in the bed manually yourself, it should always place you there as long as there's an open spot adjacent. None of the mods mess with bed spawning, so I can't imagine what the problem could be there I'm afraid.

It's great to see your build, rather unlike any I've seen yet. Anyone playing is encouraged to post how they chose to build their world, because given a blank canvas it seems most people, understandably, develop their own style.

Wands can be made with... You can see the recipe by highlighting a gold nugget and hitting R [actually 'U'].

You mustn't assume that players know everything you know about the mods you've appended to vanilla minecraft, without being told by you.  I humbly request that a reminder for these 'R' and 'U' keys to be added to the book you receive from the Enchanter NPC, the one that says "you now have permission to use the anvil and enchantment table."  That book serves no other purpose, it's only one page.  Seems to be the most appropriate place in the plot sequence too, since everything up to that point are normal recipes, and gold nuggets aren't available until [REDACTED] anyways.

I still wouldn't know to check a gold nugget specifically to get the wand's recipe, instead of the umpteen other recipes from checking the sixty or so items I've produced up until now, but an appropriate place to insert "check the gold nugget" information into the game doesn't immediately come to mind.

(uses 'U used-with' on rotting flesh).  Oh my god you mean I could've gotten leather for books by cooking zombie gibs?  Damnit, makes me want to be a cranky old man and say something stupid like "I did it the right way! by killing cows in front of their children!"

Lighting: I saw what I saw.  I idled next to Hennepin, and a zombie comes 'round the corner behind Fritz.  I'm talking to the Gnollboss, and I get an arrow in the back of my head from a skeleton that walked in from outside.  It put a few arrows in the the Gnollboss before I came back from AFK, I had to push Pup out of the way, and I struck down the monster. (Some badass Hunter is, to let Gnollboss and Pup be in danger).  When I resolved to put torches on the Skyden island, I found a zombie playing in the pool behind the building.  Those glowy blocks just ain't safe in my version of the world (Minecraft 1.4.7, Java 1.7.0_09, no mods that didn't come with Skyden, Faithful 32x32 texture pack, English(UK) language setting).

Spawn: I've used my bed to skip the nighttime more than once.  Maybe it's because I haven't moved the bed since the start of the map?  Maybe I should make a bunk-bed.  "Bunk beds are fun for all sorts of activities."

Quote

It's great to see your build, rather unlike any I've seen yet.

The two-tiers I knew would be different; right after discovering the cobblestone generator, I used the water as a rope to build under the islands. I also diverted the water to start my garden before I got the bucket.  You can see the diverted water in the top image of https://mlkshk.com/r/NIN2 .
I figured my use of distance markers (alternating 4m of cobble & wood) on the bridges would be unusual; I wanted something not only to break up the monotony of bridgebuilding, but also to measure where other islands would link-up.

The bridges-between-islands method I thought would be very common.  I know you expected towers, since one of the NPCs mentions building towers in a quest description; I may be be deliberately avoiding towers because it was suggested Posted Image .  When I was running out of room in my residence, I started building a second floor, then I tore out the floor and just put my storage chests on high shelves (see left-side, third-down of http://mlkshk.com/r/NMKP.jpg). I can still reach all of them while standing on the floor in the centre, and I have more room to walk around.
