Hey, just made a new redstone mechanism, it's a 2x1 flush piston door, and so far, I haven't seen one more compact or cheap than it. The whole thing is 5x4x4 and is a really simple contraption.

1.4.6 Compatible!

Feedback/criticism is welcome.

Nice design. By the way, you can embed the video by posting the link directly, as a youtube (dot) com link.

EDIT: Here's a more compact one by CNB

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

Thanks for the tip, I just changed it.

I have seen CNB's, which is why I decided to make one myself. I still think mine is a bit more compact. CNB's version stretches around the door, whilst mine stays on the right side (you're able to mirror it to make it a 2x2 door). It's also a bit cheaper and a more simple design.

It's just half of the most famous "Jeb door" design...
I'm still learning English, I'll be glad if you help me by pointing out any of my mistakes :)

( Instead of the lamp, you can use a repeater, a gold rail, or a fence gate.)

I don't understand what you mean. Ours are very different, as far as I can see. Link?

These are all based on the same mechanism :

http://www.minecraft...-door-possible/
http://www.minecraft...mpact-jeb-door/
http://www.minecraft...ons-encouraged/

I also remember at least 3 other topics, with either lamps, trapdoors, or repeaters to update the bottom pistons.

But, if you actually did discover it by yourself, congrats ! It's the most compact way of doing it ;)

Note that I recommend a mostly unused block to toggle updates : Powered rails. Silent (better than trapdoors), instant (better than repeaters), and no light update (better than lamps) ;)

They do look similar, and I guess they have the same idea as mine but I don't really like to use lamps or fences in the designs, those are mostly bugs and'll probably be removed in the massive redstone overhaul in 1.5.

And what is your piston trick but the exact same BUD as well..? Posted Image

What about the design I posted btw? 4x4x2 (Or 4x4x3 when open.)

Hopefully Grumm won't remove BUD pistons.

Very nice design, it's much more compact as well. I just worry about the 1.5 redstone update, the light bud might not work.

You are confused about the nature of the BUD.

Here, we have been speaking about the piston BUD all along.
  • How do they work? You first need to power a block either 2 blocks straight above, or one block in upward diagonal. Like so:

Orange is the primary input. Green is the piston we want to activate through a BUD. We'll call him Bill. :P

Posted Image

But that remote powering isn't enough, you need to Update the piston for quasiconnectivity to operate.
  • Anything will work as an update!!! Any change close to the piston will update it.

Be it lamps:

Posted Image

Or other pistons/block being pushed:

Posted Image

Or fence gates & gold rails...

Posted Image

Or a change of setting in an not even powered repeater..:

Input ON. Bill doesn't move: Posted Image

Posted Image

Put repeater from 1 to 2: Bill updates an gets powered.

Posted Image

Input OFF. Bill stays powered. Damn! Posted Image

Posted Image

Repeater 3 > 4. Bill finally notices that the input was OFF all this time and retracts.

Posted Image

Bonus: Both pistons are BUDed here. Left one is updated by the lamp. Right one is then updated by the left one. Posted Image

Posted Image

See now? You can use anything to update the piston, growing vegetables, water, etc... If lamps are not able to update pistons in the futur, pistons won't as well, or anything else actually. ^_^

Thank you for that, but I know what a BUD is, I use it all the time.

Grumm said in Sethbling's videos that he might remove all of the buggy lamps, rails and such. I get what you mean though, and I have been through your redstone lab.
