Better Snow mod is designed to revamp Minecraft's rather simple snow.  After all, does snow really just pile up an inch and then stop, regardless of how much more it snows?  And does snow really never melt? The answers are obviously no, and that is where Better Snow comes in!

Features:
  • Snow has 16 heights
  • Snow piles up during snowfall
  • After snowfall snow exposed to high light levels slowly melts
  • Snow never melts completely
  • Snow slows down mobs and players that walk through it, the deeper the slower
  • Placing snow on snow makes it one layer deeper
  • No APIs or other mods required
  • Full LAN support if all players have the mod
  • Partial LAN support if at least the host has the mod
  • Held snow does not change it's image when multiple heights of snow exist
  • Mobs sink all the way through the snow at all levels
  • Snow drops snowballs based on how tall it is
  • Snow settings can be configured
  • Settings menu
Planned Features:
  • More settings!
  • Adjustments to snowfall rendering
  • Different snowfall amounts per biome
  • Snow drops snowballs based on it's height Done!
  • Fix various bugs
  • Increase compatibilityDone! Now includes forge support!
  • Snow can fall on top of non-full sized objects and only appears on the spaces the block occupies
  • Glass and glass panes get frosted during snowfall
  • Leaves get frosted in the winter
  • A full block of snow turns into a solid snow block
  • Flowing water freezes into frozen flowing water - Original post
  • Snow piles up under trees and non-solid blocks

Install Instructions:

Install instructions are for both the vanilla and forge versions of Better Snow.
  • Install a JAR-compatible archiver, such as 7-Zip.
  • Navigate to your .minecraft folder.  On windows this is located at %appdata%/.minecraft.
  • Open the folder bin.
  • Make a copy of minecraft.jar and name it something like minecraft.jar.backup.
  • Open minecraft.jar in your archiver.
  • Open your BetterSnow.zip with any zip-compatible archiver.  Most OSes have this built in.
  • Drag the contents of BetterSnow.zip into minecraft.jar.
  • Close BetterSnow.zip.
  • In minecraft.jar, delete the folder META-INF.
  • Close minecraft.jar.
  • Start the game.  If it runs correctly, then you are finished.  If it crashes or doesn't work, follow the steps below.
  • Only do the following steps if better snow is not working.
  • If minecraft crashes post the crash report here so that I can see what went wrong.
  • Delete or move the modified minecraft.jar.
  • Rename minecraft.jar.backup to minecraft.jar to uninstall Better Snow.
  • Repeat the steps above to try again.  If it still fails, make a reply to this post or PM acomputerdog.
If you find any mods that are not on these lists or are in the incorrect spot please tell me!

Thanks! I'm glad you like it!  I actually wrote this a few months ago, but my friends have been pushing me to release it, so I finally broke down and decided that I might as well make it into a Christmas present of sorts.

I have not tested this with Minecraft forge, I only tried it with my current set of mods.  I did try it in 1.3.2 and it was not compatible.  But i have since re-written the mod, and it may now be.  I also only launch mods with magiclauncher, so forge sometimes behaves weird anyway.

I'm going to go ahead and bookmark this. I hate snow, but I do love realism. So I will try this out.

Cool!  I Can't wait to see it!
EDIT: I like it! The weird behavior with the stacking snow is a bug that i am fixing.  Do you mind if I embed your video into the original post?

It should.  The snow melting is based on light levels, so as long the mod does not change those it should work.  This also means snow does not melt at night.

Does this make a whole new IDs for the snow blocks or does it use the damage value for snow block?
I'm worried if I install this and decided to uninstall it later it would corrupt the world

No, it only uses damage values.  You can safely load worlds with BetterSnow after removing it, although the snow will behave strangely. (Minecraft's built in support for a few different heights of snow also uses data values)

behave strangely as in they turn back into solid snow blocks with different heights or something else unpredictable entirely?

They turn back into one of 8 different heights (all above data 8 are the biggest size) and if they are above value 4 they have the hit-box of a half-slab.  Also all slowing effects and whatnot are gone.

Yet another idea that needs to be shouted at Dinnerbone. Hah. Posted Image

Glad to see someone pick this mod idea up again. It seems to keep getting passed around in the community a lot. (Scokeev9's Better Snow mod/mDiyo's World Tweaks mod/etc.) I'll quickly run a test with MineCraft Forge since nobody has made any report on it.

I moved to a new account. Please go to it here.

Ah alright that'd be just dandy then :D I'll have no problem installing this mod now. Ah but is there perhaps an option to turn off the slowing effect?
