Hey if you want to install mods you have to follow these simple steps;

1. download 7zip or winRAR
2. download mod as well as mod loader or minecraft forge (note: minecraft forge and modloader manage mods)
3. go to your start menu (for windows xp you go to run) and for windows vista and 7 in the search bar type in %appdata% then .minecraft bin then your mincraft jar file open with 7zip or winRAR
4. open your mod folder e.g too many items then copy and paste the files from the mod folder to the jar file
5. delete META-INF if you don't your minecraft screen will be black
6. happy modding
ps dont have too many mods or it will crash

Deleting the meta-inf after installing forge does work, but it might cause some rare compatibility issues.

Ok but how do you do it for Mac?

Ive followed tutorials but get nothing.
